The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) announced the release of a new study that provides life cycle inventory (LCI) data for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic resins. The study's LCI report indicates that incorporating recycled PET resin in the manufacture of a package significantly reduces the environmental footprint of that package in terms of production energy required and greenhouse gas emissions. Major Italian film maker to slash workforce

One of Europe's leading producers of breathable film for hygienic applications plans to slash its workforce of close to 850 by over 500 as it attempts to stem substantial losses. Nuova Pansac, headquartered in Mantua, northern Italy, and with factories in Marghera, Mira, Portogruaro, Ravenna and Zingonia, appears to have been hard hit by a combination of the global economic crisis and some poor decisions at board level. It says job cuts will see its Portogruaro and Ravenna plants close completely, while the 484-strong workforce in Mira will be cut to 269, and at Marghera 23 of 69 jobs will go. More

PMMI releases flexible packaging market study

According to a Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) market report, the flexible packaging segment comprises 41 percent of the total packaging market and continues to gradually steal market share from rigid packaging, which currently accounts for the remaining 59 percent. Tom Egan, vice president for Industry Services at PMMI, discussed this and other flexible packaging data last week at the 13th Annual Global Pouch Forum in Clearwater Beach, Fla. More

Apollo in talks to buy US packaging firm Pactiv

Private equity firm Apollo Global Management is in talks to buy packaging maker Pactiv Corp in a leveraged deal, according to media reports. Illinois, US-headquartered Pactiv has about $1.5 billion in debt, so the Apollo deal would be among the largest leveraged buyouts in the past two years, according to The Wall Street Journal. The paper said any deal is a few weeks away and faces several hurdles. More

Walmart still searching for alternative to PVC in its packaging

However, the retailer's annual sustainability report includes some positive news about its effort to reduce plastic-bag waste in its stores. Walmart had set a goal to eliminate PVC from its private-label packaging in the U.S. by October 2007, a goal that Sam's Club Director of Packaging Amy Zettlemoyer-Lazar discussed with Packaging World. But in a new report, the retailing giant says it still has not found a suitable alternative for many of its own-brand items. More
