Imported PVC packaging sold in discount stores violates state toxicity laws: report

Almost 40 percent of imported PVC packaging of products tested, sold by discount retail chains, was found to violate state toxics laws based on a new report released by the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH). These packages contained cadmium or lead, which are restricted by laws in 19 states due to toxicity.

Portola Packaging is shutting down its cosmetics packaging arm, Portola Tech International, and ending production at facilities in Rhode Island, the U.S., and Nanhai, China. The closures will allow Portola to focus on its core beverage closure and bottle business, the company said in a statement.

Poland's injection moulder and packaging film manufacturer ERG capital group has increased its packaging film output capacity by about 30 percent at its production facility in Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland. "The latest expansion is necessitated by our company’s rising sales," said Marcin Agacki, chief executive of ERG.

DS Smith has completed the acquisition of the packaging division of SCA for £1.3 billion. The acquisition will make the corrugated giant the second biggest player in Europe after Smurfit Kappa. The deal excludes SCA's kraftliner assest.

Berry Plastics announces that it has completed the acquisition of the shares of Frans Nooren Beheer B.V. The purchase comprises the Frans Nooren Beheer Companies, notably Stopaq B.V. and its operating companies. Stopaq had revenues of approximately €23 million (about $36 million USD) for 2011. Berry expects the acquisition to be immediately deleveraging after achieving synergies.

Thanks to a $63,000 grant from SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association, Montgomery County, Md., Executive Ike Leggett announced that beginning immediately residents of single-family homes receiving County recycling pick-ups can now add PET thermoform plastics to their recycling bins. The announcement was made at the County's Shady Grove Processing Facility & Transfer Station in Derwood, Md.

Bulgaria to increase plastic bag tax by 233 percent

The Bulgarian government has decided to increase the tax on both locally made and imported plastic bags distributed in the country's retail outlets, according to various reports in the local media. To date, the Bulgarian ecotax has been imposed on single-use plastic bags with a thickness of up to 15 microns, but with the latest legislation, the country's government is extending the fee to all kinds of plastic carrier bags.

Study strikes down 'sustainable packaging' terminology

"Sustainable packaging as a term is no longer relevant today as the debate about good vs. bad packaging has moved on." That's the conclusion of a new study by PricewaterCoopers LLC (PwC), which posed the question, "Sustainable packaging: myth or reality." According the executive summary, the 24-page report set out to "revisit the packaging debate [addressed by PwC in 2010] and track the progress towards closer collaboration and common language that goes beyond the phrase 'sustainable packaging.'"

Michelman awarded $2.5 million grant for new research and development center

Michelman has been awarded a $2.5 million Ohio Third Frontier Industrial Research and Development Center Grant for its new R&D center, that will be named the Michelman Advanced Materials Collaboration Center. It will be built at the site of the company's headquarters located in Cincinnati, Ohio and is currently scheduled for completion by the spring of 2013.

Coca-Cola India, the country's leading beverage company, will invest an additional $3 billion (approximately Rs. 165,000 MN) in India through 2020 to further capture growth opportunities in the country's fast-growing non-alcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) beverage market. With the new $3 billion investment, the Coca-Cola system now plans to invest $5 billion in India from 2012 to 2020.

Bio-based plastics can play a leading role at the London Olympics but only if brand owners, waste management companies and event organisers get behind the opportunity, that's according to environmental consultancy NNFCC. "Compostable packaging is ideal for events like the Olympics, because packaging contaminated with food can be composted together, helping to cut waste and generate valuable revenue," said Dr John Williams, head of materials at NNFCC.

Wales hits 48 percent recycling rate

Wales is now recovering 48 percent of its municipal waste putting it on track to reach its 2012-13 statutory recycling target of 52 percent. New figures released by the Welsh Assembly show that during 2011-12, 48 percent of municipal waste was recycled or composted in the country, a 4 percent increase compared to the previous year.
