Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Kent Quality Foods relies on properly functioning packaging equipment to ensure finished goods are packed properly and ready to enter their distribution chains. When KQF started to recognize too many cases were leaving the case packing area poorly sealed or untaped, it was time for a closer look at the case sealing system. Reworking cases was costing the company valuable time and money. Not to mention the waste stemming from resealing cases and throwing away unusable rolls of tape.

Volcano Corp. needed a new packaging system for its Phoenix Atherectomy System, a novel catheter that cuts, captures, and clears plaque from arteries in the periphery. The first generation of clinical product was using a 5-ft-long box that took up a lot of space and was vulnerable to damage during shipping, reports Torrey Smith, R&D Engineer. According to a study from Mintel, half of consumers like to buy food products that have minimal or no packaging.

Psychology researchers have done thousands of studies showing the links between appeal and the human form. Humans find humans attractive; this is not a novel concept. Marketers and designers have latched on to this connection. Is your car smiling at you? Yes, yes, it is. Is Siri your best friend who can also do math? Apple sure hopes so. And how many times have you been tagged on social media when a friend came across your name on a soda can? We all want to share a drink with Heather. There are clever ways to pull this off without major investment. Designing your package with a human form gives it the ultimate appeal and can serve as a huge return on investment.

Trucost's study of the environmental costs of plastics vs. other materials released in late July didn't just focus on plastics lightweight advantages. In one example, the report looked at benefits from reducing food waste. "Food was an example we picked because there are certain foods that have very high environmental costs, especially beef and other meats," said Libby Bernick, senior vice president for North America Trucost, which did the study for the American Chemistry Council.

Though more manufacturers and consumers are aware of the potential benefits and value of renewable packaging materials, four factors may still impact industrywide adoption: Communication, complexity, cost and consumer demand, according to a new Tetra Pak report. Consumer awareness of resource scarcity remains relatively low. When consumers are educated, they are more willing to work to mitigate the situation, Tetra Pak found during its Learning Labs, which produced the report's findings.
