The $1.2 billion market for primary packaging materials for microwavable products is forecast to grow at a robust 9.4 percent annual rate through 2016 according to a newly released market research and intelligence report from Allied Development Corp. Rwanda cancels nonexistent Symphony deal

The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (Rema) claims that it has cancelled a deal with Symphony Environmental for the supply of "environmentally friendly plastic bags." According to local reports, the company was supplying products using its d2w additive through Alternative Packaging Solution, a Rwandan company, for the past two years. Eight tonnes of bags made using Symphony's oxo-biodegradable technology were apparently imported into the country. More

On June 19, at its 2012 Annual Convention in Chicago, AMA's House of Delegates revised its policy on labeling of GMO foods. In what the Los Angeles Times reports, on June 21, as an AMA 500-or-so-word statement, the medical association said, "There is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods, as a class, and that voluntary labeling is without value unless it is accompanied by focused consumer education." Australian High Court rejects tobacco industry's plain packaging appeal

The tobacco industry's appeal against mandatory plain packaging was dismissed by the High Court and the legislation will take effect from October. The majority of justices rejected the argument from Australian cigarette manufacturers that the laws were unconstitutional, but the reasons for the decision have not been published by the court. Co-op switches to recyclable material for onion range

The Co-operative Food has switched the packaging on its own-brand onion range to a recyclable material. The retailer said that this switch will enable 32 tonnes of packaging to be recycled per year. According to the Co-op, changing the packaging on own-brand onions from polypropylene to polythene allows the bags to be recycled, providing, what it calls, a "more environmentally responsible way of disposing of the packaging, which would have otherwise been destined for landfill."
