Graphic depictions of smoking-related diseases are to appear on U.S. tobacco packaging from next year under regulations announced this week. The plan, which mirrors legislation introduced in the U.K. in 2008 that brought sometimes gruesome images to cigarette packs, is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services’ new comprehensive tobacco control strategy. Siapi develops one-way container for Pepsico

Italian blow moulding machinery maker Siapi has worked with Pepsico International on development of a new one-way bulk water container that will be introduced in the Middle-East market early next year. Seventh Generation has introduced new packaging for its environmentally friendly dish liquid and fabric softener that features 96 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. Developed by Seventh Generation in collaboration with Consolidated Container Company, the new packaging is constructed of resin derived from recycled milk jugs and other plastic bottles and is said to represent "a quantum leap" over the 25 percent recycled content typically found in plastic packaging. Bulgaria is the latest country to take a stand against the proliferation of retail packaging waste with a plan to impose an eco-tax on plastic bags. The country's environment ministry is drawing up legislation to make the carrier bags more expensive in order to restrict their use and gradually eliminate them from the market, reported Bulgaria's Novinite online news agency. New Australian food labeling laws to come into effect early next year will force major fast food retailers such as McDonalds and KFC to display kilojoule information for all their products. Any standard food outlet with 50 or more stores nationally or 20 or more stores in New South Wales, Australia will be required to comply by the new laws, which come into effect on Feb. 1, 2011. More

Flexible packaging manufacturer Printpack Inc. will close its printing plant in Greensburg, Ind., according to documents filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Vice President Terry Harper said in a Nov. 18 telephone interview that the sluggish U.S. economy played a role in the decision, especially the flat bakery market. More
