Air Force veteran John Paradis' snoring stutters like a chainsaw before he stops breathing.
Paradis, 53, gasps for air, choking back to consciousness after his airways collapse over and over again throughout the night. He is fighting to get a full night's rest because he suffers from obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that stops his breathing more than 30 times every night. He wakes up and tosses and turns, until he rises groggy in the morning. Plagued with sleep problems since he returned from military duty in Iraq 12 years ago, Paradis finally received a diagnosis a month ago and is about to be fitted with an overnight breathing machine that is expected to relieve his symptoms.

New government research showed that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women. It is a startling find that brings up questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who have served in the armed forces.
Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers, because men, generally, are far more likely than women to commit suicide.

Volunteering improves physical health, mental health and social outcomes for post-9/11 military veterans, according to a recent study co-authored by Karen Lawrence, assistant professor at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work.
The study is the first national study of civic service among United States military veterans and will be published in the February 2017 print issue of Psychiatry Research. "It is really interesting to me that, out of all the participants, veterans who screened positive for probable post-traumatic stress disorder before the program showed the largest improvement in perceived self-efficacy at the end," Lawrence said
