Hundreds of thousands of federal employees will either be sent home or have been told to not show up to work at all on Monday, Jan. 22, as furloughs due to the government shutdown that began Friday night start to affect workers around the country.

There are a lot of jobs that are well-suited for veterans. Some veterans decide to go back to school and become health care providers, educators, information technology experts or business leaders. Others stay connected to federal service by becoming government contractors or civil servants in career fields similar to what they did on active duty. And some become politicians.

| THIS WEEK'S POLL QUESTION |
|
Veterans Association of America wants to know...
Why does the VA refuse to care for veterans dental care as part of their ongoing medical services?
- I presume it's not in the overall budget.
- Not quite sure of the reasoning.
- They do care for veterans dental procedures in the first 90 days of their discharge.
- Whatever the case, it's not nearly enough to assess anyone's dental care if it had never been addressed before.
Please provide your unique response as we take each them very seriously..
As a reminder, we assess all answers with the utmost of care and consideration. Survey results revealed in next week's VAA Dispatch.

There are a ton of groups out there that do great work for veterans, but there aren't many that organize hunts for wounded vets. That's the primary thing that makes the Send-A-Vet Foundation different: They attempt to harness the healing power of the outdoors by organizing outdoor adventures for wounded and disabled veterans. Each year they send dozens of veterans on hunting trips, fishing expeditions and other outdoor adventures.

Next week the U.S. will launch a two-year effort to find ways to increase military and civic service among its citizenry, especially U.S. youth. Scholars have written numerous articles on leadership. Many of these articles center on the traits of a leader, actions or responses of a leader or even why some consider one individual a great leader over another. Was it their time in history — being in the right place at the right time? Was it their extensive training, or lack thereof, that enabled them to persevere through the challenges they faced? Or was it plain old "good luck" that helped them through?
