President Donald Trump pledged that as the new commander in chief he will rebuild a "depleted" military and eradicate "radical Islamic terrorism."
After taking the oath of office from Chief Justice John Roberts, Trump delivered a 16-minute address from the West Front of the Capitol that revisited the "America first" and "Make America Great" themes of the election campaign. "For many decades, we've enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry; subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military," he said. "We've defended other nation's borders while refusing to defend our own."

A group of veterans advocates wants to know why President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning and other felons but won't act on a pardon for thousands of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
"We continue to hold out hope that President Obama, in his final days as commander-in-chief, will not forget the thousands of veterans with PTSD who have been denied access to health care and treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs," Vietnam Veterans of America John Rowan said in a recent statement.

The Department of Defense is mounting a renewed effort to ensure veterans are aware of the opportunity to have their discharges and military records reviewed. It is directed at those veterans who have experienced an error or injustice with their discharge to request relief from their service's Board for Correction of Military/Naval Records or Discharge Review Board.
In the past few years, the DoD has issued guidance for consideration of post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as the repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and its predecessor policies, which may have played a part in a less than honorable discharge. Additionally, supplemental guidance for service separation involving victims of sexual assault is currently being considered.

A new medical benefits rule allows some veterans to receive in vitro fertilization reproductive help through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Byron Leighton spent 10 years in the military, focusing on logistics. Living at MCVET, a Jonestown-based organization that helps veterans who are homeless or in need of help, he met Tarsha Weary.
Now he's going through another boot camp — for digital marketing.
"I've always wanted to do this because I love computers, anything tech," Leighton said.
The program, offered through a partnership between MCVET and Weary's SW Design School, is teaching four students web and graphic design skills over eight weeks this winter. They learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress and Scratch. The veterans also learn "soft skills" that will help in the civilian world of starting their own business and working, such as communication and time management.

Filing for disability with the Department of Veterans Affairs can be one of the most frustrating parts of becoming a civilian. The process of filing is confusing as hell; there's so much information out there to "help" you that you might not know where to start; and tracking down your entire medical history is just a real pain. So what happens if after you manage to create a case, provide all the supporting documentation, and submit it to the VA, you don't get the rating you think you’re supposed to have?

A hospital corpsman assigned to Marine units throughout his wartime career is looking out for his fellow troops as a civilian now, and his new job involves giving more people that same opportunity.
The desire to give back is a frequent theme among today's veterans. Knowing what many fellow vets have been dealing with these past years, their hearts go out to the military community in particular — and that's where the University of Denver's Sturm Specialty in Military Psychology comes in.
