The Senate Appropriations Committee passed an amendment that would let Veterans Affairs doctors discuss and recommend marijuana as a potential medical treatment in states where it is legal. An addition to the fiscal 2017 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies appropriations bill, the bipartisan amendment sponsored by Sens. Steve Daines, R-Montana, and Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, would let VA doctors discuss marijuana as a potential medical treatment, similar to the allowances given civilian physicians in medical marijuana states.

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars will rally on Capitol Hill to urge lawmakers to oppose legislation that would reduce the monthly housing allowance for children attending college on a parent's education benefit. Jonathan Schleifer, interim policy chief for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said the group wants Congress to preserve all portions of the current Post-9/11 GI Bill and not allow funding to be diverted to pay for other programs — even if the other programs are for veterans.

Why anyone commits suicide is something only they can know, ultimately, but it wouldn't be a stretch to surmise that post-traumatic stress disorder might have something to do with it. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health system is quick to prescribe antianxiety drugs, antidepressants, sedatives and other meds for PTSD, but that hasn't done much to stem the tide of veteran suicides. Cannabis, despite promising results for many vets who are dealing with PTSD, is off the table.
