It's a world away from the desert sands of Iraq, but it was still a something of a combat mission on Orcas Island. Fifty military veterans prepared to do battle with a new enemy: wildfire. "It's very dangerous, but I think our members are used to that sort of risk," said Vince Moffitt, a member of Team Rubicon. Team Rubicon is an international organization of American military veterans who volunteer to serve on disaster and relief missions around the globe. The group is now partnering with the Bureau of Land Management to train firefighters to combat wildfires in Washington and beyond. They've trained a total of 500 veterans for duty over the past two years.

The Government Accountability Office's review of appointment wait times for patients new to VA health care found that veterans wait three to eight weeks for medical appointments.

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry, mirrors earlier research on the association between military sexual assault and suicide: A study published last year indicated that suicidal thoughts and behavior are more prevalent in males who were sexually assaulted while on active duty than females.

A group of congressional lawmakers introduced legislation that would allow deported veterans to reunite with families in the United States.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus members Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and Jose Serrano, D-N.Y., along with Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and Rep Ted Lieu, D-Calif., worked on a bill that will urge the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to exercise its authority, under current law, to readmit individuals who were deported despite serving the U.S. military. To be eligible, the deported individual must have must have a clean criminal record and served at least six months in the military.
