President Donald Trump extended the Veterans Choice Act to set the stage for a push in Congress to expand the program and allow more access to private care for veterans.
Flanked by veterans at an Oval Office ceremony, the president signed the bill to extend the Choice program, which was to expire on Aug. 7, and allow the expenditure of the remaining $950 million in the program.

The VA has launched its Center for Compassionate Innovation to help produce and deliver patient-centered healthcare innovations and treatment options to veterans.
The CCI will explore cutting-edge medical therapies and emerging workflow practices through small pilot tests throughout the VA healthcare network.
These healthcare innovations will primarily pertain to post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, and suicide. Additionally, the VA will consider exploring any healthcare innovation that is safe, ethical, and focuses on improving veteran health and well-being.

Curbing suicide among military veterans and boosting access to mental health care are among the top priorities of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Deputy Secretary Scott Blackburn said.
Blackburn, an Army veteran, said staffing shortages in mental health and other specialties were among concerns he heard about while meeting with patients, doctors and others at New Mexico's largest VA medical center.

The plan would deduct $2,400 from future service members' paychecks to establish eligibility for revamped post-military education benefits.

Transgender people make up a small percentage of active-duty U.S. military personnel, but their experience in the service may yield long-term, positive effects on their mental health and quality of life.
A study from the University of Washington finds that among transgender older adults, those who had served in the military reported fewer symptoms of depression and greater mental health-related quality of life. The findings were published in a February special supplement of The Gerontologist.

Two former soldiers who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder have filed a federal class-action lawsuit to have their general discharges upgraded, according to a complaint filed in Connecticut.
Former Pfc. Stephen Kennedy, 30, and Spc. Alicia Carson, 28, are plaintiffs in a suit alleging that despite the requirement for the Army Discharge Review Board to give "liberal consideration" to veterans claiming their discharges were related to PTSD, diagnosed veterans are having their reviews denied.

Responsibility to provide dental care coverage to 1.37 million active-duty family members, and 376,000 Reserve and Guard members and their families, will shift May 1 from MetLife to United Concordia Companies Inc., of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The change in TRICARE Dental Program contractor will bring lower patient premiums and a modest expansion of covered services. However, United Concordia also will lower key reimbursements to dentists below what they have been paid, prompting some dentists to warn patients they won't be joining the new network.

"It's been a blast, all around," said U.S. Marine veteran Brian Riley, referring to his courses and certifications received from the nonprofit school, Workshops for Warriors. "And kind of give back a purpose again. [This is] breathing a spot of fresh life back into my plans."

When the Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' Home in Erie, Ohio, began a new music program in February 2016, attempting to help military veterans with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia, the initiative saw only a handful of residents. A little more than a year later, the Music & Memory program has grown to now having more than 20 residents participating, and includes student volunteers from Mercyhurst University and Gannon University.
