About 9 in 10 active-duty service members oppose the Defense Department's proposals to reduce their pay raises and basic allowances for housing, according to a new survey by Military.com. Responses from more than 8,400 service members, their spouses, veterans and retirees show overwhelming opposition to the Pentagon's recommendations to curb personnel costs by reducing military benefits to include pay, housing, commissary stores and health care.

"It's not all rainbows and unicorns out there" for veterans or the employers seeking to hire them, said Ray Weeks, vice president of Veterans Initiatives for Prudential Financial. Just as troops must prepare carefully for civilian life, employers must be focused in their efforts to hire them.

Number of student veterans may increase

As President Barack Obama announced a significant reduction of U.S. troops in Afghanistan by this year's end, colleges could see an increase in veteran students on campus. While Obama announced in February a large withdrawal by the end of 2014, he wants to leave up to 10,000 of the current 35,000 troops in the country. This many troops returning home, coupled with massive cuts to the Pentagon budget, could lead to an increase of veterans in higher education.

The Veterans Affairs has a huge job. It doesn't just provide assistance to senior veterans, it provides assistance to veterans of all ages. Veterans returning from war — Iraq and Afghanistan, in particular — have taxed the VA's system significantly, so many VA resources are dedicated to caring for these younger wounded warriors. However, a significant portion of the VA is also dedicated to helping provide assistance for older veterans, too.
Panel approves troop reductions, not benefit cuts

A House subcommittee on military personnel is backing the Pentagon's request for troop cuts next year but is not on board with making retirees pay more for health care. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., chairman of the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel, said any changes to retirement or health care benefits needs to wait until the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission submits a report in February.
