Major veterans service organizations have rallied behind proposed legislation to speed up the firing process at the Department of Veterans Affairs, but a government union charges it would be a gross violation of workers' rights.
"Trampling on the rights of honest, hard-working public-sector employees is not the solution to holding bad employees accountable for their actions," American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox said. He said the bill would set up different standards for VA employees and other federal workers.

Nearly four months into his presidency, President Donald Trump's White House has not set up a promised hotline for veterans' complaints that he vowed would speed up reforms at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The idea was part of candidate Trump's 10-point plan to help veterans unveiled last July. Most of the other promises are also unfulfilled, although several will require cooperation from Congress regarding additional funding or new legal authorities.

The new Veterans Affairs chief shares the goal set by former President Barack Obama's administration of ending homelessness among veterans, but says it'll take longer than his predecessor predicted.
Reducing the number of homeless veterans nationwide from roughly 40,000 to 10,000 or 15,000 is an "achievable goal" for President Donald Trump's administration, VA Secretary David Shulkin told The Associated Press during a visit to Rhode Island.

The U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy released an encouraging report on veteran-owned businesses. The report, which is based on the latest available data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2012 Survey of Small Business Owners (released December 2015 and February 2016), shows about 2.52 million businesses in the U.S. majority-owned by veterans.
Almost all of these veteran-owned businesses at the time (99.9 percent) were small businesses.

Benny Kinsey retired from the Army in 2010 thinking his experience as a command sergeant major with two bachelor’s degrees and an MBA would make it easy to land a job in the civilian workforce. It didn't.
Seven years, a layoff and more than 700 job rejection letters later, Kinsey finally landed a position as a senior recruiter for General Motors that he can't imagine leaving.
"The company culture was just so great, so supportive, so veteran friendly," he said. "I hopped at the opportunity, sold my house in Texas and moved to Detroit."

Students and instructors work on a project during the Wheeled Vehicle Mechanics Course, which teaches all the basic concepts required to be certified as an Army wheeled-vehicle mechanic. This includes performing field-level maintenance on automotive wheeled vehicles; conducting wheeled-vehicle operations; receiving an introduction to troubleshooting; plus understanding the fuel and electrical system needs, among others, when it comes to maintenance requirements.

April federal employment figures are out with good news for post-9/11 veterans: Employment is at an all-time high. The unemployment rate for the youngest generation of veterans dipped from 5 percent in March to 3.9 percent last month — the lowest since the federal government started tracking this group in 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler declared Thursday Richard Overton Day in the city and also gave the street he has lived on for the past 45 years the honorary name of Richard Overton Avenue.
