This Memorial Day, we wanted to take a look at photographer Devin Mitchell's mirror portraits of LGBTQ military veterans, which show the "double lives" they lead. Despite their uniforms, their reflections show their unique personalities, struggles and the difference between how others see them and how they see themselves.
Although it has been nearly a decade since the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," some lesbian, gay and bisexual military members stay closeted for personal safety reasons. Today, Trump's ban on trans soldiers affects an estimated 1,320 to 15,000 trans military members. Off the battlefield, many veterans live in states where you can still be fired for being an out queer person.

Veterans Association of America wants to know ...
Has the VA Medical Facilities helped or hindered your road to recovery or alleviated any of your mental, physical or emotional traumas you've had?
- No, they have not. I'm still dealing with the same problems as before.
- Yes, they've made it easier for me to cope with my conditions.
- I'm not really sure how to assess their service. I guess it's debatable.
- It's too much "red tape" just trying to see a specialist when you need them most.
- I'd rather see a private outside physician or specialist that would focus specifically on me.
Click here to provide Veterans Association of America your answer.
We assess all answers with the utmost of care and consideration. Survey results revealed in next week's VAA Dispatch.

At face value, tariffs on imported goods from other countries might sound like a reasonable way to protect American businesses and jobs. The reality is quite the opposite: Tariffs are a tax paid by American companies and consumers — not by the foreign governments targeted by the tariffs.
The administration moved forward with plans to increase tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods from 10 to 25 percent. This is bad news for nearly every sector of the American economy — retail, farming, manufacturing and technology, to name a few.

If you've deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, especially in the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, you were probably prescribed mefloquine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the drug, it is an anti-malarial with some odd and obvious side effects. The drug, a white pill, was to be ingested every Monday morning for the duration of the deployment, followed by a two-week-long daily dose of primaquine. Earlier this year, the VA established a committee to study the long-term effects of mefloquine toxicity.

Medicare recently began paying for advance care planning conversations. Many physicians, however, may have a shortage of the training needed to excel with these encounters, which involve exploring a patient's end-of-life health values, discussing relevant treatment options and then developing a plan and communicating it to loved ones and care teams. Physician experts recommend ways to incorporate this essential component of end-of-life care into standard practice.

Long-serving troops and reservists have a little less than two months remaining to transfer their Post 9-/11 GI Bill benefits to their spouse or children before a new restriction kicks in on July 12.
While soldiers still must serve for six years before being allowed to request a GI Bill transfer, they will no longer have the opportunity to do so after they have served longer than 16 years.
