Task & Purpose
On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. Army tweeted a video of Pfc. Nathan Spencer with the 1st Infantry Division, who said the Army has given him the opportunity to "give to others, to protect the ones I love, and to better myself as a man and a warrior." Then the Army tweeted a simple, open-ended question: "How has serving impacted you?" The responses took on a life of their own.

As Veterans Affairs officials prepare for a massive expansion of caregiver stipends later this year, lawmakers are expressing concern that the department still can't administer the current program properly, leaving many participating families confused and frustrated. In the last eight years, VA officials have approved more than 40,000 caregiver applications, but only 19,295 were actively participating in the program at the start of April. In eight states — Hawaii, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, and Vermont — enrollment has dropped by more than half since the start of 2017. In a statement, VA officials disputed those figures, saying the data "includes many intervals of care, including approvals and/or removals and multiple caregiver assignments over time for the same veteran, so it's not the best measure of program participation."

A recent study by the Veterans Health Administration found that opioid overdose and associated mortality rates increased among veterans from 2010-2016. The rate of overdose deaths increased from 14.47 in 2010 to 21.08 in 2016, primarily due to heroin and non-methadone synthetic opioids. The new VHA study also found the rate of patients who filled an opioid prescription with 3 months of their overdose decreased from 54% in 2010 to 26% in 2016. This indicated that non-prescription opioids, which receive less attention in overdose prevention efforts, are actually harming veterans the most.

Veterans Association of America wants to know ...
Has the VA Medical Facilities helped or hindered your road to recovery or alleviated any of your mental, physical or emotional traumas you've had?
- No, they have not. I'm still dealing with the same problems as before.
- Yes, they've made it easier for me to cope with my conditions.
- I'm not really sure how to assess their service. I guess it's debatable.
- It's too much "red tape" just trying to see a specialist when you need them most.
- I'd rather see a private outside physician or specialist that would focus specifically on me.
Click here to provide Veterans Association of America your answer.
We assess all answers with the utmost of care and consideration. Survey results revealed in next week's VAA Dispatch.

The nation is now only in the rudimentary stages of addressing the mental health issues at the root of veterans' suicides and homelessness, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said.
We are not even at the Sputnik stage in this country when it comes to getting our arms around mental health issues," Wilkie said, in a comparison he has used before.

Long-serving troops and reservists have a little less than two months remaining to transfer their Post 9-/11 GI Bill benefits to their spouse or children before a new restriction kicks in on July 12. While soldiers still must serve for six years before being allowed to request a GI Bill transfer, they will no longer have the opportunity to do so after they have served longer than 16 years. This new rule will affect senior active-duty personnel and those who for whatever reason are unable to transfer any portion of their benefits to one or more dependents before that July 12 deadline.
