Five years ago, only three states allowed military spouses to transfer their professional licenses when their families moved. As of now, all 50 have accepted them. This milestone is the culmination of four years of work by Joining Forces, led by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden. "Our military families already sacrifice so much on our behalf, and to ask them to sacrifice their livelihood as well was absolutely unacceptable."

Tricare is a great benefit. This Department of Defense-run health plan covers uniformed and retired career service members, National Guard and Reserve members, other qualifying personnel and their families.
At age 65, retired nondisabled service members become eligible for both Medicare (you need to be enrolled in Part A and Part B) and Tricare for Life. (Disabled individuals may become eligible for both at an earlier age). Tricare for Life functions as a Medicare wraparound plan with prescription drug benefits — in other words, it's the equivalent of the Medigap and Part D drug plans that a retired civilian might buy to cover costs that Medicare doesn't.

Roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide nationwide, according to new data from the Department of Veterans Affairs — a figure that dispels the often quoted, but problematic, "22 a day" estimate yet solidifies the disturbing mental health crisis the number implied. In 2014, the latest year available, more than 7,400 veterans took their own lives, accounting for 18 percent of all suicides in America. Veterans make up less than 9 percent of the U.S. population.

In the wake of the Department of Veterans Affairs proposal to allow full practice authority for all VA advanced practice nurses, the turf battle over who is best suited to provide healthcare has been fired up again. Although this is not a new battle, the tides have been changing in favor of more authority for ARPNs, which causes the question of quality care to be raised once again.

The U.S. Veterans Health Administration, which is likely the largest provider of LGBT healthcare in the world, is implementing various systemwide changes aimed at improving LGBT care, including transgender e-consultations to aid interdisciplinary providers and the addition of a self-identified gender identity field to all veteran record systems. These actions and other planned VHA system changes are discussed in an editorial published in LGBT Health, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert Inc. publishers. The article is available free on the LGBT Health website until Aug. 5.

USA Today
While we commemorate our nation's birthday just as President John Adams espoused — it's all too easy for us to forget the great sacrifices. Yet, for almost 4 million Americans, many of whom are millennials, July 4 has a deeper meaning. While proud of their service, it is hardly a surprise they feel a separation from the rest of us. Less than 1 percent of our fellow citizens serve in our active military today and only about 7 percent of Americans living ever served, whether in wartime or peacetime.
