Plans are progressing to extend online military exchange shopping privileges to all honorably discharged veterans, Military Times has learned.
The Defense Department's Executive Resale Board voted unanimously Aug. 9 to recommend the policy change, sources said. Extended shopping privileges would apply only to the exchange system's online stores — not brick-and-mortar facilities located on military installations.

The Defense Department's Executive Resale Board voted unanimously to recommend that military exchange services open online discount shopping to 19 million honorably discharged veterans starting in late 2017. The plan to extend shopping discounts to most American veterans has two purposes. One is to reward them for their service with product savings that, on average, should be 20 percent over commercial department stores, with military exemption from state and local sales tax part of the discount.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing a pilot program that would allow some military veterans between the ages of 18 and 21 to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce.
Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act called for the pilot program, which would last three years and allow military veterans younger than 21 years old to drive a commercial motor vehicle across state lines if they received specified heavy-vehicle training while in the military and are sponsored by a participating motor carrier.
The notice about the veteran pilot program is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Aug. 22.
