After the first increase in annual homeless veterans estimates in seven years, the leaders of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development say they are confident in improvements made on the issue in recent months.
"Across the country in general, we're getting a lot more proclamations about the end of homelessness, not just veterans homelessness but homelessness in general" said HUD Secretary Ben Carson in an interview.

One of the most concerning issues for military veterans is homelessness. Whether vets are struggling with mental health issues or simply don't have the funds for a home, one state is offering a solution. The Togus Veterans Administration Medical Center in Maine has recently opened the Cabin in the Woods project. Thanks to this new project, 21 veterans now have their very own home. However, this initiative is dedicated to providing homeless veterans in Maine more than just a home.

Conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan may have led to an increase in rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to new research looking at the mental health of Britain’s soldiers.
The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found the overall rate of PTSD among current and ex-serving military personnel was 6 percent in 2014-2016, compared with 4 percent in 2004-2006.

All states will soon permanently have the option to waive the commercial learner’s permit knowledge test for certain military personnel looking to transition into the trucking industry following their military service. In a final rule to be published last week, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration gives state driver licensing agencies the option to waive the test, but it does not require states to do so.

President Donald Trump has donated a portion of his annual salary to establish a new entrepreneurship program for military veterans, White House officials said.
The officials said Trump would donate his quarterly salary to the U.S. Small Business Administration, which will use the money to establish an "Emerging Leaders" program solely focused on helping veterans start small businesses after military life.

The improving job market for veterans and transitioning service members has set off a competition among employers for those with skills that easily translate into the private sector, according to a military-to-civilian recruiting firm.
"Companies are fighting a war for talent" as both the civilian and non-civilian unemployment rates have dipped below four percent, said Matt Disher, a senior vice president with RecruitMilitary, a firm that seeks to connect employers with "high-talent" veterans.

In the military, you probably most aligned with both your branch of service and your military job or occupation. You may also have changed military jobs at various points in your career. To the extent you held a profession, it would have been the "Profession of Arms" for those in the U.S. Army, or an affiliation more tied to your unit or squad. Affiliating with your military branch continues after you leave military service, but you'll also take on a new professional role, within a civilian industry (unless you're pursuing full-time retirement).

According to Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for women veterans continues to drop. Evidently, more women veterans are entering and persevering in the workforce. Programs geared towards post-911 female veterans have been instrumental in helping them transition into new jobs and stay off the streets. Women veterans are the fastest growing group in the veteran community, according to a recent Pew Center article,: Yet, "by 2045, the share of female veterans is expected to double to 18 percent." Based on these findings, it is predicted that more female veterans will be entering into the workforce than ever before.
