Military retirees and those who receive disability checks and some other types of pay from the Department of Veterans Affairs will see a 2 percent pay raise in their monthly paychecks in 2018. It is the biggest cost of living (COLA) increase since 2012, equaling as much as $310 a month for those at the top of the retirement pay charts. The average military retirement check for an E-7 with 20 years of service will go up by $46 a month, while an O-5 with the same time in uniform will see an $88 monthly increase.

Army veteran Kendrick Mobley is aiming to tackle both with a housing initiative under the non-profit Montrel Living. The goal of the initiative is to transition veterans out of emergency shelters and into their own living space, while providing veterans with mental and social health care.

On average across the nation, 20 veterans die by suicide each day.
One out of every 10 Montanans has answered the call to serve in the military, each with their own unique story of service and experience, and some with invisible wounds.
"Veterans have a unique experience in that they are exposed to dangers that potentially increase their risk of mental illness if treatment isn't sought, and then increase their risk for suicide. Add that to the culture of don't tell anyone when you're feeling mentally ill or don't share, and there's this really silent struggle that our veterans deal with," explained Juliana hallows, Montana VA Suicide Prevention Coordinator.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will provide free, hard-copy identification cards that include their names, photos and an identification number.
