Mortgage rates for VA home loans are near their lowest levels ever — and veterans with VA mortgage eligibility are taking notice. VA loan volume is surging, led by a wave of home purchases; and, a rise in the number of VA-to-VA refinance loans closed. According to Ellie Mae, whose mortgage software manages more than 3.7 million mortgage transactions annually, VA loans account for roughly 1 in 10 closed loans.

The Veterans Affairs Department is trying to recoup more than $200 million in overpayments that mistakenly went to veterans using GI Bill benefits to attend school, according to a government watchdog group. The VA routinely overpays GI Bill benefits to both schools and individual veterans, mainly when veterans drop classes or fail to complete them and become ineligible for the tuition and living stipends that the VA initially paid, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Add to that the other common challenges that veterans face when trying to transition to a civilian life, and there are a lot of potential problems that can arise. Veterans transitioning to civilian life often have a difficult time adjusting to the lack of structure and change in pace of life. They feel isolated, have difficulties re-connecting to family and friends, and feel stress as they seek jobs and worry about financial issues.
