Exactly one year before the 2018 midterm elections, one of Democrats' key strategies to retake the House is coming into focus. In a wide range of districts around the country, Democrats are placing their bets on military veterans. "There's no doubt that veterans have unique qualifications and experiences that give them important credibility with Democrats, independents and Republican voters alike," Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Tyler Law told ABC News.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David Shulkin has called for a new approach to dealing with the department's vast array of compensation programs while stressing again and again that he is not looking to cut benefits. A new Veterans Benefit Advisory Board would "bring clarity to what we're trying to do for veterans and what's best and how we can do that in the best way," Shulkin said in an address Monday at the National Press Club.

Veterans Association of America wants to know...
Do you think each service member is discharged appropriately (honorable, court martial, bad conduct discharge, etc.)? And should it affect their civilian life?
- I'm not sure how they assess certain criteria in determining discharges.
- It has been very interesting to see that some get certain preferential treatment and others don't.
- They don't leave you with much wiggle room to defend yourself with the evidence acquired.
- Some are motivated to get you out if you're not well liked or have pre-determined assessments based on your background and cultural ethnicity that you're "not a good fit."
Please provide your unique response as we take each them very seriously..
As a reminder, we assess all answers with the utmost of care and consideration. Survey results revealed in next week's VAA Dispatch.

"It is a special kind of employee who steps forward and takes responsibility to get the job done," says Col. Allen Weh, retired U.S. Marine Corps reserve officer, and president and CEO of CSI Aviation Services Inc.
Weh, who founded CSI in 1979, employs former military personnel and is often asked for advice from veterans seeking to transfer their military skills to the business world. Here's how he thinks vets can best present their skills in resumes and job interviews.

When Mike Pereira, rules analyst at Fox Sports, drove from his house in Sacramento, California, three summers ago to visit a friend in Bend, Oregon, he had an epiphany.
The former vice president of officiating in the National Football League has a ritual during this journey. "Once I get past Sacramento airport, I turn off the radio so I have no sound for [more than] six hours. I cleanse my mind," he says.
Using the time to contemplate challenges, he started thinking about a referee shortage at youth and high-school levels. Then another thought emerged: What about hiring veterans?

The unemployment rate for veterans is the lowest it has ever been since September 2001, and it continuing to fall. This achievement is due in part to the employers who have made a commitment to hire those who have served in our armed forces. In advance of Veterans Day, job site Monster worked with a panel of veteran hiring experts and Military.com to gather a list of the 10 best companies for veterans. All of the companies in the top 10 employed at least 15 percent veterans.

The Dirt
"Housing is where jobs go to sleep at night. Affordable housing is where essential jobs go to sleep at night," explained David Smith, CEO of the Affordable Housing Institute at the ASLA 2017 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. The farther apart a home is from a workplace, "the more stress" is placed on the transportation system. As essential workers are forced to look farther and farther from the urban core for affordable housing, they reinforce patterns of sprawl, increase traffic, and reduce economic efficiency, not through any fault of their own. A few solutions, according to the panel, are building new affordable housing in smaller lots and through more "moderately-dense" infill development.

A lot of Ron Fleming's fellow soldiers spent the last five decades trying to forget what they saw and did in Vietnam. Now 74, Fleming has spent most of that time trying to hold on to it. He has never been as proud as he was when he was 21.
But now, it is. Fleming has congestive heart failure, arthritis and breathing problems. He often lands in the VA hospital with asthma attacks, and the palliative care team visits him regularly. He thinks about death.
"I wish it'd get off its ass and come on me. I'm sick of this crap," he said, as his heart rate monitor ticked up. "You see, dying's the easy part. Living is what's hard."

Army Maj. L. Burton Brender writes: "When I returned from Iraq in 2007, I took my family on a Christmas vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a resort town that combines the glitz of Las Vegas with the traditional values of rural America.
One night, while attending a concert full of celebrity impersonators, I was caught off guard when, during intermission, "Elvis" put down his guitar and asked every veteran in the audience to stand. I was embarrassed, but I stood up with a handful of others as the audience applauded and The King thanked us for our service."
