Celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving leads off the winter holiday season in America. While it has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions — beginning as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of a harvest — it has evolved into a largely secular holiday. Thanksgiving has been with us since Europeans first landed on our shores, so there’s plenty of history, some mystery, and plenty of fun facts and figures associated with the holiday. So here’s a bit of turkey day trivia to mull over as Thanksgiving 2018 approaches.

On Veterans Day, many of the nation's efforts to demonstrate appreciation for those who serve do not reach active-duty soldiers, particularly those who are forward-deployed.
Our soldiers are mission-focused and geographically concentrated. The parades and patriotic ceremonies that take place this time of year often pass them by, which is unfortunate, as I know first-hand the impact the nation's support has on the health and morale of the force.

For the second year, Veterans Day will be extended throughout the entire month of November. The White House has declared November as National Veterans and Military Families Month and to be recognized as such via a presidential proclamation. Throughout the month, veterans and their families can look forward to tributes, celebrations, and special events in their honor. The best place to go in your community to find local Veterans and Military Families Month events is your Veterans Health Administration facility.

People often confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day, which takes place at the end of May, honors members of the military who have sacrificed their lives in combat. On November 11, Veterans Day celebrates members of the armed services who are still among us. The holiday, formalized in 1919, began following the end of WWI, which ended exactly a century ago on November 11, 1918.

How Housing Matters
Federal and local prioritization has dramatically reduced the number of homeless veterans, but a shortage of affordable housing could undermine both the short-term and long-term results. Through federal programs and local dedication, a handful of states and cities, including Nashua in New Hampshire, have ended veteran homelessness. National homelessness statistics, however, show that, after dropping nearly 50 percent, homelessness among veterans is on the rise in high-cost areas like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle. Fierce rental demand across the income spectrum, inadequate housing supply, and insufficient funding for rental subsidies and services are putting veterans at risk.

The Dirt
Invisible wounds. It's a haunting phrase and one that's become all too familiar to a vast number of the military men and women serving in conflict zones in recent years. These wounds, a fact of modern war, have proven particularly vexing to the medical teams whose job it is to treat our troops. As many as 40 percent of soldiers returning from active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan experience these wounds, which all too often lead to suicide, according to Fred Foote, a former Naval physician, scholar of the Institute for Integrative Health, fierce advocate for wounded veterans, and leader of the Green Road project.

There are known racial and ethnic disparities in death due to traumatic brain injury and a new study has now examined if there is an association between TBI mortality and where a U.S. veteran lives.
