From May 19: Many veterans know about the basic healthcare and education benefits available to them through the Department of Veterans Affairs: Tricare and the GI Bill. While these benefits alone are substantial, numerous other programs help provide more benefits to veterans and their families. Even within the healthcare and education programs are little-known benefits to improve the lives of veterans and help ease the financial burden of medical care or other expenses. Here are 10 veterans benefits you haven't heard about that all veterans should see if they qualify for.

Retirees: Start paying for Tricare select now or lose coverage in January

From Oct. 27: Most retirees enrolled in Tricare Select will soon be required to pay a new monthly premium or lose their health insurance coverage. A little-noticed provision in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act is going into effect next year. It authorized the new fees, which will impact only retirees, their family members and survivors on Tricare Select. You are not affected if you use other Tricare programs such as Tricare For Life, Tricare Prime, Tricare Reserve Select, Tricare Retired Reserve or Tricare Young Adult.

While all states offer special benefits to veterans ranging from free fishing licenses to home loans and free college, two have recently announced new and expanded cash relief programs for their veterans.

From June 16: The 2020 VA Disability Rates saw 1.6% cost-of-living increase based on the COLA calculations. For a 50% disabled veteran with a spouse and one child who currently receives $1,026.36 per month, this amounts to about $16 more per month.

5 military installations selected for Phase III COVID-19 vaccine trials

From Sept. 8: The Department of Defense selected five installations to participate in phase III COVID-19 vaccine trials.
"The Department of Defense continues to play a key role in the development of a potential COVID-19 vaccine," said Tom McCaffery, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. "Now that vaccines have passed the first phases of testing for safety, dosing, and response, we are ready to move into the next phase where volunteers are needed to join large clinical studies."

VA to expand caregiver stipend benefits to pre-9/11 veterans this fall

From Oct. 13: The Department of Veterans Affairs is set to expand caregiver stipends to more veterans and their families this fall — a year later than originally planned.
Congress already signed off on legislation expanding VA's caregiver program to older veterans who served before Sept. 11, 2001. But holdups at the department prevented those veterans from receiving their stipends.
