The hallmark of green building comes in the form of LEED certification through the U.S. Green Building Council, which is achieved by meeting various design and operating criteria. Bob Trebilcock writes, "It's a New Year's tradition for anyone who writes for a living: use the first column of the year to look back at what just happened and try to make sense of what's to come. Truth be told, it was probably a way for writers to look productive while recuperating from New Year's celebrations. Here’s what I think was most notable about 2012, and what I intend to watch in 2013." More

Trying to choose the right type of lift truck for a particular application? These guidelines can help you make a perfect match
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you think about it, choosing the right type of lift truck is not very different from seeking the perfect mate. In both cases, reliability and trustworthiness are prized characteristics. And — fairy tales about peasants marrying royalty aside — the ability to "fit in" and operate effectively in a particular environment is a major consideration. With so many classes and categories of lift trucks on the market, though, matching the right equipment to an application can be a challenge. More

Dave Blanchard writes, "Growing up as part of the baby boomer generation, and with a natural predisposition toward both Biblical epics and the popular culture of the time, I had a brief fascination in the 1970s with the doomsday writings of Hal Lindsey. His books seemed to have it all: insidious villains bent on nothing short of total global domination, and not just of people but their very souls." More

How to change an organization without blowing it up
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Too often, conventional approaches to organizational transformation resemble the Big Bang theory. Change occurs all at once, on a large scale and often in response to crisis. These approaches assume that people need to be jolted out of complacency to embrace new ideas and practices. To make that happen, senior management creates a sense of urgency or takes dramatic action to trigger change. Frequently, the jolt comes from a new CEO eager to put his or her stamp on the organization. Yet we know from a great deal of experience that Big Bang transformation attempts often fail, fostering employee discontent and producing mediocre solutions with little lasting impact. More
