Cliff Holste: Is your DC workplace an accident waiting to happen?
Distribution Digest    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While on business in Mexico City a few years ago, I was amazed at the 1,000s of green VW Beatle taxicabs running helter-skelter all over the streets. The traffic volume and noise was at times overwhelming even when compared to NYC. But even more disturbing was the number of pedestrians zigzagging across the streets while paying scant attention to traffic lights or crosswalks. It made me nervous just watching these would be matadors dodge the infamous little green taxis as they made their way across to the other side. Having spent a considerable amount of time in distribution centers, I couldn't help but think they would feel right at home in the typical DC environment. More

More companies finding cost, carbon savings in supply chains    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More major companies are tracking their supply chain emissions, and many, along with their suppliers, also are saving money from reducing carbon. The Carbon Disclosure Project's latest supply chain report looks at what the 57 members of its supply chain program and 1,000 of their suppliers have been doing to integrate climate change into their businesses. The report, by consulting firm A.T. Kearney, looks at activities from 2010 and found that 86 percent of member companies worked with their suppliers on carbon-related activities, a jump from the 46 percent that collaborated with suppliers in 2009. Robots, RFID help KH Lloreda distribute its products
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
KH Lloreda, Spain's largest household cleaning products company, has developed its own automated shipping system, transporting product from its manufacturing site, through its distribution warehouse and on to customers. This, the company reports, has virtually eliminated the need for manual labor. The system has been in operation since December. According to the company, the RFID technology tracks cartons of products as they automatically are assembled onto pallets, placed onto trucks, unloaded and stored at a distribution center, reassembled onto pallets in response to a retailer's order, and again loaded onto trucks for delivery to that retailer. Michael Fertik: Managing, motivating employees in their 20s
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I've been lucky to work with some awesome employees in their 20s. While that formative decade is long and dynamic for each person; in a companion post I've offered some observations on the differences between Generation Z and Generation After-Lehman; there are some consistencies in how best to manage and motivate excellent 20-somethings. Younger people are especially hungry both to learn and to receive affirmation that they are doing a good job. I've found the best ones are generally much more motivated by incremental education and acknowledgment than they are by a modest bump in salary. More

Carriers gaining upper hand on shippers
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
FTR Associates' Trucking Condition Index rose to 7.1 in December, the highest level yet recorded during the current recovery. The index reflects tightening conditions for hauling capacity. Current conditions and strong prospects going forward are expected to steadily raise this index — possibly to a new record in early 2012. The Trucking Conditions Index is a compilation of factors affecting trucking companies, and the current readings as well as the forecast for the next few years bodes well for increased vehicle utilization and solid pricing power for carriers through the period. FTR expects the delays in implementation of the FMCSA's Hours-of-Service and CSA regulations to push out the peak shortage timing to early 2012. More

2010 the hottest year on record — or was it?
The Green Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recently, the World Meteorological Organization (an arm of the United Nations) announced that 2010 had tied with 2005 and 1998 as the warmest years on record, giving further support to those who believe global warming caused largely by man-made greenhouse gases are huge risk to life as we know it today. The WMO says that in 2010, global average temperature was 0.53 C (0.95 F) above the 1961-90 mean, putting it in a statistical tie with 2005 and 1998 for the highest average global temperature across an entire year. Grants promote zero-emissions technologies
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, a global shipping and logistics provider, announced plans to award $100,000 in grants this year to entrepreneurs working on zero-emissions technologies for shipping and port logistics. WWL also has expanded the eligibility criteria for the Orcelle Grants, to include alternative energy sources and energy-efficient technologies with applications for 1) commercial shipping and 2) terminal operations. This reflects WWL's own research and development into the E/S Orcelle, a zero-emissions concept vessel, and the Castor Green Terminal, a zero-emissions terminal and cargo processing center. More

John Powers says he knows a lot about vertical reciprocating conveyors. In fact he recently issued a press release to make that message loud and clear. The press release may have gone out under his company's logo, Century Elevator Co., of Quincy, Mass., but you could almost hear him say: "I've installed and repaired hundreds of VRCs over the years. I intend to add to that record with yours." He didn't say that, but his press release did say the following. More

Dan Gilmore: Time for more 'Dynamic Supply Chains'?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One thing I have long thought about the great books or articles on supply chain or most any other topic is that they are multi-layered. What I mean by that is that you read them once, and come away with a lot. Read them a second time, ideally with a bit of a break in between, and you find another set of insights, down in another layer, that you missed on the first read. That's how I feel about my friend Dr. John Gattorna's most recent book, "Dynamic Supply Chains." When A copy showed up last fall, I didn't even at first connect that this was actually a revised edition of 2006's "Living Supply Chains," an excellent work that I commented on at the time. This new book, updated with five new chapters and including the effects/ramifications of the financial crisis, reads much in fact like a truly new work, with even the original portions taking on new meaning today versus 2006 because of the "new normal" we are operating in.
