Has collaborative distribution's time come?
DC Velocity    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the world of supply chain management, the bridge connecting strategy and execution can sometimes be a long and rickety span. For example, take the concept of "collaborative distribution." It has been around for years, frequently has been cited for its potential benefits, but really never has lived up to its billing. More

Challenges and opportunities for third-party logistics providers -- and their customers -- in 2010
Supply & Demand Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the global economy still crawling out of recession, the third-party logistics industry continues to feel the effects of the economic downturn. As companies in this space look forward to closing out a difficult 2009 and getting a fresh start in 2010, they are faced with a mixed bag of signals and conflicting trends that muddy the prospects for growth ahead. The good news is that business appears to be picking up. More

Are strategic plans now obsolete?
Modern Distribution Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent article in The Wall Street Journal calls into question the effectiveness of strategic planning. The article contends that companies today need to be more flexible than long-term plans may allow. On its face, this sentiment seems logical. But if you dig a little deeper, there's an inherent flaw in this method of thinking. More

The case for backshoring: Which manufacturing operations should return to the United States?
strategy+business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For years, the NCR Corporation simply followed the pack. Like many other large U.S. manufacturing companies, the ATM maker in the past couple of decades relied heavily on offshoring and outsourcing to trim factory costs. By making much of its equipment in cheaper offshore locations in the Asia/Pacific region, and by hiring Singapore's Flextronics International Ltd. to make other equipment, NCR could slash hundreds of millions of dollars in plant expenses and be reasonably certain that its ATMs met quality standards. Professionals from consumer goods companies and major retailers have approved a suggested set of common definitions and principles for sustainable packaging. The Consumer Goods Forum's Global Packaging Project, jointly chaired by Roger Zellner, director of sustainability, research, development and quality at Kraft Foods, and Sonia Raja, Tesco's head of packaging, is a group of retailers and consumer goods manufacturers committed to developing a common industry language for packaging and sustainability and outline terms for future pilot projects. Logistics news: Using the crowd engineering to improve DC performance
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is it possible to tap into the collective wisdom of the "crowd" (distribution and manufacturing workers) to gain insight into how to improve work processes and productivity in manufacturing and distribution environments? Yes, according to Steve Mulaik, a consultant at The Progress Group. In what he refers to as "crowd engineering," Mulaik offers an approach that in part uses the somewhat well understood concept of "preferred methods" and then combines it with some smart new age thinking about using today's resources to find a better way to get the job done. Supply chain KPIs: What's important?
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of my colleagues, John Westerveld, recently wrote a blog about visibility titled "Visibility in the supply chain: What you can't see can hurt you." The key point John is making is that if you can't see it you can't manage it. There is a related issue discussed in a LinkedIn group on supply chain KPIs, which loosely can be interpreted as "You can't change what you don't measure." What I find interesting in the discussion is that there is very little mention of financial metrics. More Manages Freight Claims Worldwide! was developed to provide a quicker and more efficient way for freight claim professionals to process and manage their OS&D claims and thereby improve cash flow for their business. It was established as a means to link shipper and 3PL's to the carriers that accept claims via the Internet.

Kraft's Cadbury purchase highlights new logistics market
Transport Intelligence    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The takeover of iconic U.K. confectionery manufacturer Cadbury by U.S. food giant Kraft is proving controversial on both sides of the Atlantic, not least because the latter's largest shareholder has criticized the deal as bad value for money. Kraft justified the $19 billion purchase as improving its prospects for growth, but behind the rhetoric is a greater logic that is driving consolidation in the global fast moving consumer goods sector, namely the ability to create logistics structures that can reach customers in every market across the world. RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Iveco, a commercial truck and bus manufacturer owned by the Fiat Group, plans to expand the RFID system it uses to process the receipt, picking and shipping of replacement parts, as well as guarantee their authenticity. The application, which has been in operation at Iveco's distribution center in Turin, Italy, for approximately one year, will be installed at a DC in Madrid, Spain, during the few next weeks. More

Wal-mart forms strategic alliance with Li & Fung
Logistics Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Wal-mart Stores Inc. announced Jan. 28 that it formed a strategic alliance with Li & Fung, both sides declared victory. Besides this deal, Walmart's new sourcing strategy involves the creation of Global Merchandising Centers as well as a change in leadership and structure. The agreements with Li & Fung are nonexclusive and do not include volume or shipment commitments. But is it a "win" for both partners? Some analysts are skeptical. More
