Kane Is Able
Greening the bottom line
STORES Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A couple of years ago, Mark Peternell, then the new vice president of sustainability for Regency Centers, was certain that demand for all things "green" soon would be a primary driver for retailers. But the economic landscape has changed, and leaner times mean that sustainability efforts may be taking a back seat to survival tactics. For some, green still equates to "more expensive" or "luxury." Not so at Regency. While all this happened around him, Peternell began to notice that, even though he may have overestimated demand for green efforts and LEED spaces on the retail side, he underestimated it on the capital side. Freight broker metrics show stability despite rough 2009
Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After a tumultuous 2009, freight broker metrics are showing signs of stabilization. That's one of the findings of a recent broker benchmark survey conducted by TransCore. Survey respondents moved an average of 990 loads per month, which was not a significant change from last year's survey -- even though truck freight declined by 9 percent compared to 2008 -- according to the American Trucking Associations For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index. TransCore's Freight Index also reported that spot market load volume for the year slid by 43 percent. More

Material handling sector begins long road to recovery
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the U.S. economy begins to pick up, so will orders for material handling equipment, according to the Material Handling Industry of America. The group's latest Material Handling Equipment Manufacturing Forecast shows orders growing 6 to 8.5 percent in 2010. That's not nearly enough to offset the 37.4 percent reduction in orders in 2009, but it's encouraging nonetheless. More

Nanotube RFID: Better barcodes?
Technology Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
RFID tags have made paying toll fees and public transit fares a breeze. But the tags, which are made of silicon, are still too expensive to replace ubiquitous barcodes to similarly speed up grocery store checkout lines by remotely scanning a product while it's still in the basket. Cheap plastic RFID tags could soon change that. Researchers in Sunchon, South Korea, have printed RFID circuits on plastic films using a combination of industrial methods: roll-to-roll printing, ink-jet printing and silicone rubber-stamping. More

Report urges FDA to beef up REMS, supply chain tracking to improve drug safety
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new report says the FDA has the greatest potential to improve drug safety if the agency's Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies are improved in two fundamental ways. First, the policies need to take advantage of new technologies, such as electronic medical records, genetic testing and electronic tracking. And secondly, they need to incorporate the real-life experiences and insights of all stakeholders, such as patient advocates, prescribers, pharmacists, academics, payers and sponsors. More Manages Freight Claims Worldwide! was developed to provide a quicker and more efficient way for freight claim professionals to process and manage their OS&D claims and thereby improve cash flow for their business. iGPS urges Congress to set fire safety standards for pallets
Material Handling Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Intelligent Global Pooling Systems, a provider of plastic pallets, says more than 15 wood pallet fires throughout the past year illustrates the need for Congress to set national fire safety standards for shipping pallets. iGPS points to a fire at Hernandez Pallet Co. in Phoenix that started the evening of March 31. Nearly 100 firefighters battled the two-alarm blaze, which, according to local media reports, started in stacks of wood pallets surrounding the building. Barrels of chemicals reportedly were stored on the pallets. More

How lean is too lean in the high-tech supply chain?
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Lean manufacturing and the lean supply chain have been hot topics for the last decade. It's really heating up now that Toyota is suffering safety and quality woes, and naturally, all fingers point at Toyota's supply chain. While the lean manufacturing pioneer grapples with the fallout and recovery from "unintended acceleration" and other issues, high-tech manufacturers would do well to view the troubles at Toyota as a cautionary tale and take a look inward at their own lean supply chain practices.
