BLS publishes study of occupational injuries and illnesses that resulted in days of job transfer or work restriction

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently conducted a pilot study to learn more about occupational injuries and illnesses that resulted in days of job transfer or work restriction. The study results were published July 31. The purpose of the study was to compare the case circumstances and worker characteristics of injuries and illnesses that require days away from work to recuperate and those that lead to days of job transfer or restriction only, without time away from work.

East Coast ports face warehouse crunch

East Coast ports are falling behind on supplying warehouse space to meet booming container traffic, real estate brokerages say, according to The Wall Street Journal. The expansion of the Panama Canal is reshaping seaports up and down the U.S. East Coast, as local governments spend billions to deepen harbors, raise bridges and make other infrastructure improvements in anticipation of larger ships.

Planning needs to become much more dynamic, with analytics adapted to make optimization a continuous process, he says. The complexity of today's logistics is overwhelming many companies, says Comstock, senior vice president for customer success at Grand Canal Solutions, which offers a cloud-based supply-chain analytics platform called Optimize.

North American robotics market sets new records in 1st half of 2015

The North American robotics market is off to its fastest start ever in 2015, according to new statistics released from Robotic Industries Association, the industry's trade group. A record 14,232 robots, valued at $840 million were ordered from North American robotics companies in the first half of 2015, an increase of 1 percent in units and 7 percent in revenue over the same period in 2014, which held the previous record.

Sitting may be killing us, but standing all day is just as bad

We know sitting all day in an office chair is killing us, and there's no shortage of stories in the news telling us so. And while you should limit sitting, standing for long periods isn't that much better, according to a new study. The research, published in Human Factors, the Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, found that workers who stood all day experienced significant muscle fatigue, regardless of age and gender.
