Outdated software increases risk of catastrophic system failure
    Supply Chain Digest
Material handling systems that are 5-plus years old are probably operating with outdated PLC/PC programs, and worse yet, software code that can no longer be supported. Given the speed at which technology advances, after about three years of operation, industry experts recommend that companies begin the process of updating their systems controls and software. This will protect against operational obsolescence and premature system failure.

Shippers conditions fail to improve, but hey, it could be worse
    Chain of Thought
David Blanchard writes, "The last time we looked in on the Shippers Conditions Index — a monthly score developed by analyst firm FTR Associates to indicate the current transportation environment for shippers — the number was a less-than-robust -7.5. Any number under the zero threshold means things aren't going too well, but a score that reaches -10 is a telltale sign that conditions are reaching a critical level. So it's a bit concerning that the most recent score (for the month of June 2013) dropped more than another half-point to -8.1."

If everyone is happy, you're doing something wrong
    By Michael J. Berens
In the world of business, change is the only constant. It has a nice Zen quality about it, don't you think? By now, though, it has become something of a cliché — and an overused one at that. Still, like all good maxims, it contains a profound truth. As does its corollary, which does not get repeated as often: Change hurts. It's natural to assume that if our idea is a good one, people will respond positively — maybe even show a bit of enthusiasm. But that is rarely the case with a change initiative.

How to reward your stellar team
    Harvard Business Review
You've been told that getting the most from your team depends on rewarding and recognizing them collectively. But it's tough to do that, especially when most management systems are so focused on individual performance, undermining the very teamwork you're hoping to encourage. Luckily, you don't have to overhaul your company's evaluation process or pay structure.

Hyperloop and the future of air/sea shipping
    By Justin Stoltzfus
After many years of Americans anxiously awaiting the same kind of high-speed rail systems already in production in countries like Germany and Japan, a revolutionary transportation idea is finally looming large on the tech radar. The Internet is buzzing with reports of Tesla Motors co-founder Elon Musk's plan for a new kind of tube-based rail transport — the Hyperloop. The technological specifics of Musk plan are, probably intentionally, vague. But even without linking Hyperloop to specific applications, it's clear that the technology would lead to a lot of changes in many industries.
