  • Competitive advantage can come in a box
    Chain of Thought
As a dealer in industrial products, D&H Distributing is responsible for making the stuff of high-tech giants like Microsoft look good in the eyes of small and medium size businesses. But to Lisa Paul, D&H's director of distribution, before the boxes that comprise computer networks can impress, it's the people who pack D&H's shipping boxes who represent not only D&H's competitive advantage, but that of its customers. Supply Chain Digest
Task interleaving — the combining of tasks types in a distribution center, such as a putaway and replenishment — has long been touted as an important driver of potential labor savings from adoption of advanced warehouse management systems. But in what circumstances can task interleaving really be used? Is it more myth than reality?

Why we need more (women) leaders
    Harvard Business Review
There's been a lot of talk this past year about why more women don't become leaders. About what our society needs to change to produce more female leaders. There's even been some discussion about why women are better leaders than men in some arenas. Often overlooked is this basic reality: what the world needs is more leaders, of whatever gender or any other characteristic.

5 traits essential for sustainability leadership
Sustainability is a career field that is beginning to mature. Ten years ago, there were few dedicated jobs with sustainability in the title. Professionals who were passionate about this management issue often found themselves creating their own job descriptions. Those early adopters paved the way for new career paths — and often whole new departments — of sustainability practitioners. Over time, those roles have evolved, with new insights about where and how sustainability fits into a corporate organization and what makes a sustainability executive successful in the role.

    A crisis in leadership
    By Michael J. Berens
Leaders must make difficult decisions that are not always popular. They instigate changes that upend people's lives and shift the balances of power and wealth. But I suspect there are other forces at play.

Cliff Holste: Using excess inventory to lower taxes and benefit nonprofit organizations — A smart double play!
    Supply Chain Digest
Excess, nonmoving inventory is a common business problem that, fortunately, contains its own solution. By donating that new, idle merchandise to charity, a business can earn a federal income tax deduction under Section 170(e)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The IRS Code says that regular C corporations may deduct the cost of the inventory donated, plus half the difference between cost and fair market value. Deductions may be up to twice-cost.
