Why safety should NOT be a priority
Material Handling & Logistics    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
That's right. For a culture of safety to catch on, don't prioritize it. Value it. Safety must become part of an employee's — and a company's — value system. Here's the difference: A priority is something that changes because of outside influences and demands. A value is something that outside influences can't change. You may see coffee as a priority, but if getting a cup would make you late for an important business meeting, you'll skip it. However, if showering and shaving would make you late for that meeting, chances are you'll be late because good hygiene is a value. A value backed by a strong system of social sanctions. More

Managing inventory in an unpredictable economy is a delicate balancing act
Zebra Enterprise Solutions via SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the economy struggles with a slow and unpredictable recovery, consumer and business spending behavior is anything but predictable. As companies look to maintain their bottom line without creating excess waste, gauging how much to increase production to meet market demands without creating excess inventory is becoming a more complex task. In fact, a recent study by IDC Manufacturing revealed that there is currently $900 billion of waste in global manufacturing supply chains. In order to successfully navigate this "gray" period, manufacturers need to optimize supply chain operations and manage the issue of excess inventory. More

Costs causing strain in the supply chain
Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two-thirds of leading industrial company executives say cost containment remains the top priority in managing their supply chains, but almost 4 in 10 now acknowledge that driving down costs has damaged relationships with their suppliers, according to the results of a recent global survey conducted by KPMG International. The KPMG global survey polled nearly 200 senior level executives from the aerospace, metals, engineering and conglomerates sectors across North America (making up 32 percent of total respondents), Western Europe and Asia-Pacific to understand how their supply chains were changing as a result of prevailing economic uncertainty. EECC tests find big performance differences for tags read in bulk
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new report from the European EPC Competence Center has found that the performance of ultrahigh-frequency EPC Gen 2 tags has improved vastly from earlier technology. However, the study also notes that read rate drops in bulk environments, sometimes by as much as 85 percent. On the other hand, the report indicates, the better-performing tags experienced a reduction in read rate of only about 20 percent. "The most surprising point was that the read range through the proximity effect sometimes increases up to 20 percent," says Conrad von Bonin, EECC's manager. More

Bob Trebilcock: The supply chain inflection point
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Only the paranoid survive." Given the claims almost every candidate is making about the other guy (or gal), no matter their party persuasion, you might think I'm talking about politics. But I'm talking about materials handling. That quote came from a book by Andy Grove, the former CEO of Intel, and he was talking about business leaders. The great ones, he added, never stop worrying and never stop learning. More

A million-plus reasons to value the pharmaceutical cold chain
Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More than 500 attendees and nearly 60 exhibitors energize the 8th Cold Chain Distribution for Pharmaceuticals Global Forum in Philadelphia. If it sounds too good to be true, we're advised, it probably is. But switching from traditional shipping containers and materials to more sustainable options yielded environmental benefits and financial savings in excess of $1 million a year for the packaging changes enacted by Medtronic Spinal & Biologics for its INFUSE® Bone Graft product. Brazil quickly becoming a player in the global economy
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For a glimpse of booming Brazil's international aspirations, look no further than a 2-year-old, high-tech denim factory in one of Argentina's poorest provinces. The plant's owners, the Delfino family, launched their Santana textiles business in Brazil in 1963 with a line of hammocks. Content at first to expand at home, they retooled along the way, manufacturing denim for the lucrative jeans market and opening four factories in Brazil. Then in 2008, Santana's chief executive, Raimundo Delfino Filho, set his sights abroad, opening the plant in this town in Argentina's far north Chaco province. Now the firm is building a larger factory in south Texas. More

I saw an article in IndustryWeek the other day stating that according to the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI, the proposed reduction in ozone emissions would harm U.S. manufacturers. The report cites costs in the trillions and job losses in the millions. This really got me annoyed. Why does it seem that every time there is a concerted effort to make improvements, there is always some group pushing back, trying to keep things the way they are? Now don't get me wrong; I’m very sympathetic to the plight of the North American manufacturer. As a person who started his career in manufacturing and now works for a software company that sells solutions specifically for the manufacturing industry, I want to see manufacturing in North America thrive. Cheap lift truck labor isn't affordable
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Natural disasters and disastrous economies have something in common: they bring out itinerant contractors. These are the guys who go door to door offering to repair damaged property in the wake of a tornado or flood — or when they hear people in a neighborhood lost their jobs and can only afford the cheapest labor if they need to have something repaired. The timely offer of a quick fix under those circumstances is hard to turn down. What if what you need repaired is a lift truck? More

Mitch Mac Donald: Could ad campaign be answer to logistics' PR woes?
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Someday, we may look back at September 2010 as a turning point for the logistics profession — at least where public perception is concerned. And if that happens, it will all because, of all things, an advertising campaign. For the logistics profession, any change in public perception would be a change for the better. Logistics has long had a public awareness problem, with a profile so low it might be better termed subterranean. And the problem is not just with the general public; for years, logistics largely was ignored by the business community as well. More

7E and Standard 20 provide a "set of tools" pertaining to thermal profiles of insulated shipping containers during distribution and to laboratory test environments. Four panelists introduced new guidelines to help manufacturers in shipping pharmaceuticals/biopharmaceuticals through the distribution chain during the 8th Cold Chain Distribution for Pharmaceuticals Global Forum on Sept. 22 in Philadelphia. The presentation focused on the International Safe Transit Association Standard 7E and Standard 20. More

Most SMEs are burdened by supply chain delays
Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The sense of confidence that returned to small and midsized enterprises at the beginning of the year is giving way to some uncertainty mid-year, in terms of expectations for revenue and customer demand, according to a study conducted by Prime Advantage, a buying consortium for midsized industrial manufacturers. Among the highlights of the survey findings, 36 percent of respondents expect revenues to increase for the second half of 2010, which is nearly identical to the survey results from 12 months ago. Eighteen percent predict revenues will decrease during the next six months. More

Bob Trebilcock: Are you ready to reset your supply chain?
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I'm in Park City, Utah, this week for Supply Chain Reset, the logistics conference that HK Systems — now, officially part of Dematic — has been putting on for 25 years. During this morning's opening ceremonies, Mike Kotecki, senior vice president of North American sales, asked a simple question of the 400 or so folks in the room: Who here plans to do business this year like they did last year? The question, and the title of the conference, really goes to the heart of what all of us in the materials handling and logistics businesses are facing as we negotiate a still challenging business environment. Seizing opportunities when the outlook is bleak
SN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During the past two years of economic malaise, it is easy to assume that business activity has "slowed down." It is reflected in the national unemployment levels and in many companies' top-line performance, especially those companies that are dependent on consumer spending. But beneath the surface, a closer look reveals that some operators in the food distribution industry have indeed been quite active in terms of preparing for the future and taking advantage of situations that the downturn has created. Zurich unveils 'all-risk' supply chain insurance
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
The U.S. arm of Swiss insurance and financial giant Zurich Financial Services Group has introduced what it calls a new type of supply chain risk insurance product: one that covers all occurrences that could disrupt a manufacturer's or retailer's supply chain but that extends coverage only to those suppliers considered most critical to the companies' operations. Zurich executives say the product is different from traditional "trade insurance," which covers a company's entire supplier base but protects only against specific scenarios, known in business insurance lingo as "named perils." Industrial batteries boring? Not to an astronaut
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I never thought material handling and logistics were rocket science until I met an astronaut. I didn't have to go far to do that. He was in the same room I was recently, listening to a presentation on batteries for industrial vehicles. It was at HK Systems' — I mean, Dematic's — Material Handling & Logistics Conference held in Park City, Utah, that I met Jerry Linenger. He was the lone American on a five-month mission aboard the Russian Space Station Mir in 1997. It was bad enough being away from his wife and family all that time, but a fire aboard the space station required him to not only think strategically, but also to think about the prospect that he might never see his family again.
