RFID technology resurgent in the market
Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Throughout the last few years, it was often the case that radio frequency identification was dismissed as a nonstarter, because despite being a promising piece of technology, it faced many issues. These included the likes of it not being scalable, its lack of integration with existing technology such as bar codes, privacy issues, as well as often being very expensive. However, Jeremy Friedler of Maxiom Group said that there has been a resurgence in the use of RFID technology in recent times, especially thanks to the fact that a swell in the number of chips sold has been reported by Impinj. Shipping pallets: Leaning out the supply chain
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bob Trebilcock writes, "What's the best way to create the best unit load? That's a question that has occupied Marshall (Mark) White for much of his professional career. White is a professor emeritus at Virginia Tech who has specialized in pallet and packaging design. He is also the driving force behind the systems-based approach to unit load design, a concept that emphasizes the importance of the interactions between the pallet, transport packaging such as stretch wrap, strapping, corrugated and plastic bottles, materials handling processes and transportation systems." Make reusable assets show returnable value
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you're not tracking and managing your reusable pallets and containers, someone else likely is benefiting from your investment. Here are four steps to making sure you reap the rewards. At any given time, a manufacturer can likely tell you the quantity of bulk items available for processing, and a distributor can tell you the number of trucks it has on the road and the number in for repairs. However not every company can tell you how many reusable assets, including pallets and containers, they have out at retail stores, in the warehouse or waiting for repairs. More

Obtain an 80 percent increase in pallet load storage by changing to NA lift trucks
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cliff Holste writes, "Many warehouses and distribution centers are guilty of poor space and cube utilization. When doing operations assessments, we often find that the company is operating with conventional counterbalanced forklift truck equipment operating in +12 foot wide aisles. Even though many of these facilities, especially those built in the last 10 to 15 years, have a clear height of 30 feet or more, the counterbalanced trucks are limited to stacking (4) pallets high in a selective pallet rack. With this type storage configuration, 1,000 pallets can require as much as 10,500 square feet of floor space." More

Control towers, perhaps the most important concept to come out of supply chain management practices in some time, is a concept in desperate need of definition and description. Aberdeen recently ran a survey of business intelligence looking for answers, and came away with some great insight and good direction. But business intelligence does not provide the technology capabilities that were identified by Aberdeen as necessary to support a control tower. More
