Using Metrics to Achieve Results
It's easy to fall into the trap of too many metrics/too little useful information. The trick is to use your metrics to drive performance in your facility — based on the principles of benchmarking that YOU apply to your unique situation.

MORE WERC Certified Warehouses
WERC proudly adds to the list of facilities in the WERC Warehouse Certification Program, a voluntary program whereby an individual warehouse facility's capabilities to perform core warehousing functions is certified. The program provides an industry-standard grading methodology that includes a facility inspection and process assessment by an independent, trained third-party auditor. Check it out.

Adapt for today, live to handle tomorrow
Material Handling & Logistics    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the old days of material handling systems design (circa year 2007), the input you needed to develop a plan was based on past levels of material handling activity, a five-year business plan and an understanding of how future requirements may vary. So, if you understood the yearly receiving, storing, picking, packing and shipping level activity of a distribution center, you were able to gain a feel for how the business was going to change over the next five years and what level of sensitivity analysis you needed to perform. In short, you were ready to begin the design of the material handling system. More

Mobility solutions for the grocery distribution industry
Natural Products Marketplace    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In light of the recent passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act, trace and track technology within the grocery supply chain is more important than ever. Research by VDC, WERC, ARC and Aberdeen concludes the essential processes in distribution operations are relatively common across all industries. These operations are usually high-volume, complex operating environments with many different handling characteristics. Typically, the margins in the grocery industry are also very low. Therefore, streamlining operations and controlling costs are paramount to their success. More

That decision has won the approval Michael Steen, chairman of the International Air Cargo Association. "We wish to commend TSA on this decision," Steen says. Pallet reader survey: Usage on the rise
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At any given moment in time, there are nearly 2 billion pallets on the move across the United States. New, used, metal, plastic, corrugated, wood or wood composite, pallets are, quite literally, the foundation of the materials handling industry. For those outside of the materials handling industry, pallets might seem like a just basic commodity. But for those of us on the inside, pallets are an essential component that can have a major impact on an operation's process and ultimately its bottom line. More

US demand for flexible packaging to exceed $18 billion in 2015
Packaging World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demand for converted flexible packaging is projected to increase 3.8 percent annually to $18.2 billion in 2015. That's according to a new study, "Converted Flexible Packaging," from industry research firm The Freedonia Group Inc. The study adds that gains will be similar to the pace of the 2005-2010 period based on the well-established presence of pouches in a number of food and nonfood markets coupled with overall deceleration in raw material price growth. Converted flexible packaging's source reduction capabilities also will be increasingly advantageous in light of initiatives by major retailers and packaged goods firms to evaluate their packaging in terms of eco-friendliness and cost reduction. Empowering the next wave of sustainability leaders
Environmental Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Society's most critical natural resources are increasingly strained as global population spikes and industrialization increases at an unsustainable rate. Water, one of the most basic necessities of human life, is becoming scarce as supplies dwindle while demand increases. Some experts predict that water scarcity could affect as much as three quarters of our population — or 6.9 billion people — by 2050. In addition, as globalization presses forward, energy consumption, intrinsically linked to water consumption, will continue to escalate. More

New book argues that supply chains require common sense, advanced technology to survive

Stolarczyk, president of Kontane Logistics, in his book, "Logical Logistics: A Common Sense Primer for Your Supply Chain." "The globalization of commerce has made sophisticated logistics technology a necessity for companies large and small," he writes. More

Firms try to paint their supply chains green
Stuff    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the third of an eight-week series leading up to Fairfax Media and PwC's Sustainable60 awards in November, Nick Krause puts sustainable procurement under the microscope and finds Kiwi companies are slowly catching on to what's becoming a global norm. If there was a poster boy for sustainable procurement in New Zealand, then global dairy giant Fonterra would surely be it. The concept is gaining momentum almost daily within the company, says Spring Humphries, Fonterra's eco-efficiency program manager, mainly because of growing pressure for exporters worldwide to have a green supply chain. At the same time it will begin including a summary of information from the vendor reports in its annual Citizenship Report. Meanwhile, Ford announced it has more than tripled the size of its program aimed at understanding and measuring its suppliers' carbon footprint. More

Workplace study's conclusions are kind of a stretch
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The expression "that's a stretch" usually gets applied to statements or conclusions that are built on faulty premises. So how do you best describe a weakly supported conclusion about the very act of stretching? A stretch about stretching? There are plenty of special interest groups that will trot out some study or another that will tell you there are many benefits to indulging in something that's not really good for you, whether it be liquor, coffee, chocolate or some other vice. But it's rare when somebody will cite a study that says something good for you is actually not so good for you. There's always a reason, though, after you connect all the dots. More
