Conveyors in distribution: Ready for change
Material Handling & Logistics    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As more shoppers take advantage of the flexibility and choices available through e-commerce, more traditional retailers large and small are building their e-commerce fulfillment capabilities. That is changing internal and external material handling infrastructures. Supply chains are losing mega distribution centers and gaining regional fulfillment centers to minimize fuel costs and accelerate delivery times. There are also more multifunction facilities combining manufacturing and distribution under one roof. Add to this mix a tremendous growth in return channels and it's plain that "flexible" must be part of the job description on every material handler's resume. More

    5 do's and don'ts for a successful implementation

For nearly four years, Usain Bolt has been widely regarded as the "fastest man in the world." But late last summer, he temporarily lost that title when a false start disqualified him from the 100-meter world championship race. Although logistics is anything but a fast-paced sprint, Bolt's experience offers a powerful lesson for every supply chain professional: There's a right way to approach the start of any major endeavor, and even world-class competitors occasionally get it wrong. Consider, for example, the prospect of getting a new 3PL-driven project or contract logistics operation off the ground. More

On Sept. 12, Swift Transportation Co., the nation's largest truckload carrier by sales, took the unusual step of holding an analyst conference call before the end of its third quarter, rather than waiting until the quarterly results were made public in late October. In the 10-minute update, Phoenix-based Swift said that its July and August truck volumes were following normal seasonal patterns, and that third-quarter traffic should rise 4 percent year-over-year. In addition, Swift held to its forecast of full-year pricing growth of 4.4 percent, and re-affirmed that it would meet earnings-per-share targets for the rest of 2011. More

Do you believe in distribution elves?
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John M. Hill writes, "Remember the old days? I mean, the really old days when you taped a quarter to a magazine coupon and sent it off to Marvel Comics, taking on faith that someone, maybe an elf, would create and ship a Jack Armstrong Club ring to you within a few weeks? Lord knows how those elves pulled it off. But whether it was a crystal set to a Dick Tracy wrist radio, the merchandise just magically appeared." More

Economists see more jobs for machines, not people
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A faltering economy explains much of the job shortage in America, but advancing technology has sharply magnified the effect, more so than is generally understood, according to two researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The automation of more and more work once done by humans is the central theme of "Race Against the Machine," a new e-book. "Many workers, in short, are losing the race against the machine," the authors write. More

What would your mother say about your warehouse?
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John M. Hill writes, "Having visited hundreds of warehouses around the globe, it occurs to me that the routine followed and initial observations made may well be traceable to my childhood. My mother was charming, always a smile on her face. But, she was also fastidious about the way her house and children looked. Our rooms would have passed an inspection by the toughest drill sergeant, and I still scrub behind my ears. On an initial warehouse walk-through, here's a baker's half dozen items from the checklist I have used for more than 30 years. Within minutes, it tells me more about the quality of operations and management than an hour in a conference room." More

    Managing your information supply chains
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Supply chain technology used to be about boxes. These boxes, commonly labeled ERP, TMS and WMS, often appeared within a bigger box representing a company whose idea of a system was a hierarchy of these boxes connected by lines. If ever outside-the-box thinking is needed, it's now — and it has to happen among technology vendors and their customers, all of whom enable the lines of communication within and between all supply chain boxes. That's the kind of thinking that deals with what-ifs. More

IBM claims software breakthrough with new 'multi-objective' supply chain optimization technology
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Somewhat quietly at the CSCMP Conference in Philadelphia recently, IBM announced what is calls a substantial breakthrough in supply chain optimization technology, saying it is the first to provide "multi-objective" optimization capabilities that will enable companies to better understand trade-offs between different objectives, such as cost and service. The technology innovation was announced as simply one of a number of other new features in the latest release of IBM's LogicNet Plus XE, a network optimization tool IBM picked up when it acquired ILOG in 2009. However, the potential impact on supply chain optimization from this development could actually be quite significant. More
