TIME
There was once a time — the mid-1980s, to be precise — when women were earning close to 40 percent of the country's undergraduate degrees in computer science. That's not gender parity, but it seems tremendous compared to where that number sat in 2014, when only about 18 percent of such degrees went to women. That paltry figure underscores one of the tech industry's greatest challenges: Boosting the number of women who study, and later pursue careers in, technology.

PC graphics chip firm Nvidia is looking to give the independent developer community a little bit of extra love. Today the company announced its new Indie Spotlight Program, which it hopes will aid indies with marketing and discoverability of their games.
"It's never been easier for you to build the game of your dreams, and there are more games than ever for gamers to play. But this also means that it has become increasingly difficult for gamers to find your game. That's where the Nvidia Indie Spotlight Program comes in. We'll leverage our GeForce community to tell them about your great game. All upside. No catch," the company said on its official site.

"Everyone is making games. It's not enough to get noticed."
TinyBuild CEO Alex Nichiporchik knows better than most the power of livestreaming. The studio announced in January that its latest game, Punch Club, wouldn't be released on Steam until players had completed an audience-controlled stream of the title on Twitch — a feat accomplished in under two days. Twitch later estimated that referrals from its channels had been responsible for around a quarter of the game's sales.

David Gaider writes: "Do you? Do you really? Be honest with me.
I mean, I don't want to shoot down your dream. There are lots of people who've done the research, who know exactly what they're getting into when they say this and who spend years earnestly pursuing their goal. There are also lots of people who like the notion of getting into game development but figure they'll never have any real skills like programming or art so this is their best bet."

Games are full of decisions. Players routinely choose between sets of options, such as items in a store, heroes in a MOBA, dialogue branches in an RPG or tactics for taking down an outpost in an open world. The processes of decision making are a core subject of cognitive psychology, and there’s a wealth of literature relevant to those wishing to present choices to players in ways that support the designers' intent. This post will focus in on a particular avenue of research around the psychological implications of giving players many options to pick from, and consider the instances in which it can be beneficial (or not) to give players an abundance of choice.

In the past couple of months, Google, Apple, and Facebook have all announced major changes to user acquisition tools, as well as the app store business and user experience.
These upgrades for smart acquisition bidding, discovery, and subscription have the potential to change the mobile game landscape for years to come. Matt Marshall, the founder of VentureBeat, delved into this at our GamesBeat 2016 conference a couple of weeks ago.
