This time last year, what became known as #Gamergate rocked the Internet and the world of video games.
The stated purpose of the hashtag movement, according to those who supported it, was that it was about corruption and ethical malfeasance in video game journalism, but the debate — played out largely on Twitter, Reddit and other discussion websites — highlighted rampant sexism and harassment in video game culture.
The online firestorm has simmered down somewhat, but many women in the industry still feel it's hard to speak up about these issues.

A new initiative ran this summer to help encourage more young girls to consider a career in coding, thanks to Cambridge University.
The Coding School for Girls was organised by both the university's computer laboratory and Cambridge Coding Academy, and aimed to teach girls the basics of coding over the course of a week. One year ago, the Internet became a much stranger, much darker place when the Gamergate controversy kicked off, via a blog post attacking independent game developer Zoe Quinn. The 9,425-word blog post (by Quinn's ex-boyfriend) alleged that Quinn had a relationship with gaming journalist Nathan Grayson that enabled her to garner favorable reviews, but this was later proven false — and within days, the conversation largely turned to rampant sexism in video game culture, both in the games themselves and behind the scenes. Quinn became the recipient of rape threats, death threats and doxxing (the release of someone's personal documents over the Internet), and was driven from her home.

Being funny while also asking someone for half a million dollars or more is not an easy thing to pull off. You want to give the impression of being serious, but at the same time you do not want to be forgettable and boring.

As the lengthy credits of any given game will tell you, most video games are not the product of one mind but the combined efforts of dozens, hundreds or thousands of people.
It might be assumed that each of those people simply serve their role, complete their set tasks and the game magically comes together, but the truth is that someone needs to be tracking each person to ensure development is on schedule.
