Diabetic patients are encouraged to get regular checkups to monitor for the increased pressure and ulceration that can eventually require amputation. However, ulcers are only diagnosed after they occur, meaning that patients require healing time, which dramatically increases healthcare costs. Members of the BioDesign: Medical Innovation program, created by The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and its affiliated Hadassah Medical Center, set out to solve this problem.

Rocker bottom shoes are commonly recommended for patients who have undergone ankle arthrodesis. Limited data are available to support this recommendation. In the present case-control study, two groups of participants were identified for the investigation: a study group of nine patients who had previously undergone ankle arthrodesis and a normal group of nine healthy volunteers. Gait data were collected using a video recorder while the participants walked barefoot and wearing rocker bottom shoes.

There are a variety of techniques one may employ to enhance bone healing and surgeons are increasingly utilizing these techniques to assist with fracture healing and help improve outcomes with arthrodesis and osteotomy procedures.
Bone growth stimulation may involve the use of invasive, semi-invasive or non-invasive techniques. In addition, ultrasonic energy, magnetic field therapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, low-energy laser therapy and other mechanical therapies are options for the treatment of delayed union, non-union, failed arthrodesis and congenital pseudarthrosis. Researchers have also studied the use of bone growth stimulators for the treatment of Jones fractures.

It has been about three months,
and the much-hyped ICD-10
transition crisis and crash never
materialized. In the years and
months leading up to the Oct.
1, 2015 implementation date,
it seemed like there were as many
organizations, groups and providers
decrying the switchover (and trying
to eliminate, derail or continue to
postpone) as organizations, groups,
providers and payers trying to get it
over with.
While the naysayers bemoaned
dire predictions of massive universal
software infrastructure and payer
failures — everything from providers
being unable to successfully submit
claims to payers to payer software
crashes resulting in a general inability
to process provider — claims ... ever.
The CMS postponement in 2013 and
the Act of Congress postponement in
2014 didn't necessarily help.

Study results recently published in Prosthetics and Orthotics International showed the thickness of socks changes non-linearly with time for amputees.
Joan E. Sanders, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington in Seattle, and colleagues wanted to determine whether a correlation existed between the age of a prosthetic sock and the resulting change in thickness under standardized weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing activities.

Women who have chronic sleep problems may have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, Harvard researchers report.
Problems such as trouble falling or staying asleep, getting less than six hours of sleep, frequent snoring, sleep apnea or rotating shift work appear to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, the researchers said. They found that women who reported trouble falling or staying asleep all or most of the time had 45 percent greater odds of developing type 2 diabetes.

The frontal plane projection angle is frequently used as a measure of dynamic knee valgus during functional tasks, such as the single leg squat. Increased dynamic knee valgus is observed in people with knee pathologies including patellofemoral pain and anterior cruciate injury. As the foot is the primary interface with the support surface, foot and ankle mobility may affect the FPPA. This study investigated the relationship between foot and ankle mobility and the FPPA in asymptomatic adults.

Arteriovenous malformations are defects of the circulatory system that arise during embryonic or fetal development or soon after birth. They are comprised of entangled arteries and veins without capillaries that pass blood directly from arteries to veins. The presence of an AVM disrupts this process, compromising the arteries from carrying oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the body’s cells and compromising the ability of veins to return oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs and heart.

Diabetic forefoot joint deformities are a known risk factor for skin breakdown and amputation, but the causes of deformity are not well understood. The purposes of this study were to determine the effects of intrinsic foot muscle deterioration and limited ankle joint mobility on the severity of metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) deformity, and determine the relationships between these potential contributing factors and indicators of diabetic complications (peripheral neuropathy and advanced glycation end products).
