Although some foot and ankle injuries are not serious, physicians are often advised to recommend additional tests to make the proper diagnosis. A new study found just how damaging a misdiagnosis of a lower extremity injury can be to a patient's health.
As an osteopathic physician, I view treatment of foot and ankle injuries as acute and preventive care because mismanaged injury leads to so many future problems for patients," lead author, Jessica Reissig, DO, of the Department of Orthopedics at Plainview Hospital in New York, said in a news release.

As many as two-thirds of the homeless population suffers some form of foot problem at any given time, according to research two Dalhousie medical students recently published in the international scientific journal, PLOS ONE.
Matthew To and Thomas Brothers, both fourth-year students in Dalhousie Medical School's MD program, found that homeless and vulnerably housed people are seriously affected by a wide range of foot problems — from infections, ulcers, and injuries, to deformities, ingrown toenails, and nerve damage caused by uncontrolled diabetes. For some, problems as severe as frostbite, gangrene and diabetic neuropathy can lead to amputation.

Foot ulcers account for 15 percent of comorbidities associated with diabetes. Presently, no device allows the status of foot ulcers to be continuously monitored when patients are not hospitalized. In this study, researchers describe a temperature and a pH sensor capable of monitoring diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers developed in the frame of the seventh framework program European Union project SWAN-iCare (smart wearable and autonomous negative pressure device for wound monitoring and therapy).

The Root model of normal and abnormal foot function remains the basis for clinical foot orthotic practice globally. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between foot deformities and kinematic compensations that are the foundations of the model.
A convenience sample of 140 were screened and 100 symptom free participants aged 18-45 years were invited to participate. The static biomechanical assessment described by the Root model was used to identify five foot deformities.
