New running shoes to burn off Christmas excess are a popular purchase in the New Year, but the terms associated with supportive footwear and alternative styles of running can be confusing, a new study has found.
In what they believe is a first of its kind study, University of Manchester psychologists conducted in-depth interviews with eight recreational runners to find out their attitudes to barefoot and minimalist running (minimalist shoes are designed to mimic running barefoot).

Podiatry Today
The Lapidus bunionectomy is probably the go-to bunion surgery method for treating large and/or recurrent bunions, but the procedure is not without its pitfalls. Even when experienced surgeons perform the Lapidus procedure, things can go wrong and it is important to understand what possible complications exist and how to manage them successfully. While there have been tremendous advances with the Lapidus bunionectomy during the past decade that have allowed surgeons to minimize postoperative problems, it is impossible to completely eliminate complications altogether.

The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery
Previous biomechanical studies have advocated the use of locking plates for isolated distal fibula fractures in osteoporotic bone. Complex rotational ankle injuries involve an increased number of fractures, which can result in instability, potentially requiring the same fixed angle properties afforded by locking plates. However, the mechanical indication for locking plate technology has not been tested in this fracture model. The purpose of the present study was to compare the biomechanical properties of locking and conventional plate fixation for distal fibula fractures in trimalleolar ankle injuries.

Lower Extremity Review
Running is a hugely popular form of exercise due to its low-cost investment, accessibility of appropriate environments and obvious health benefits. As running has become mainstream, so has the prevalence of plantar fasciitis or fasciopathy. The incidence of lower extremity injuries in runners is estimated to range from 4.5 percent to 10 percent and the prevalence from 5.2 percent to 17.5 percent.

The New York Times
Running injuries are extremely common, with some statistics estimating that as many as 90 percent of runners miss training time every year due to injury.
But the underlying cause of many of these injuries remains in question. Past studies and popular opinion have blamed increased mileage, excess body weight, over-striding, modern running shoes, going barefoot, weak hips, diet and rough pavement or trails. But most often, studies have found that the best indicator of a future injury is a past one, which, frankly, is not a helpful conclusion for runners hoping not to get hurt.

Medical Daily
An age-old debate rages on and Medical Daily has found someone with an answer: Is wearing sneakers better for your posture than wearing other types of shoes?
"Absolutely," says Spencer Weisbond, a board-certified pedorthist and owner of Orthotic Solutions in New York City, explaining a sneaker can control the foot motions that lead to poor posture.
"Put a good pair of sneakers on someone with poor posture and you'll see it immediately," he says.

Prevention of surgical site infections and the reduction of wound-related complication rates have become increasingly emphasized by hospital task groups and government agencies given the degree of economic burden it places on the health care system. Platelet-rich plasma contains growth factors and other biomolecules that promote endogenous microbicidal activity. We hypothesized that PRP would help prevent postoperative infection and delayed wound healing.
