Too much time spent sitting is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes, but the effect is primarily seen among those who are also obese or inactive most of the time, a recent Danish study finds.
Overall, the study linked sitting for more than 10 hours a day to a 35 percent higher risk of diabetes compared with sitting for less than 6 hours daily.

The Weil osteotomy has become one of the most commonly performed surgeries on the foot in the world. Lowell Weil Sr., DPM, started performing a distal oblique metatarsal osteotomy in 1984 to treat intractable metatarsalgia.
The procedures that surgeons commonly performed at that time for this problem had high complication rates associated with them, most notably transfer metatarsalgia. Some studies suggested that the transfer metatarsalgia rate were as high as 50 percent for the procedures performed at that time. The concepts of the distal oblique osteotomy that Dr. Weil performed were to shorten an elongated metatarsal accurately without creating elevation while easily being able to fixate the osteotomy. This would prevent transfer metatarsalgia.

Lower Extremity Review
People who are obese fall and injure themselves at a higher rate than those who are normal weight and scientists and clinicians are working to identify the specific biomechanical variables involved in their falls in hopes of finding ways to prevent them. Identification of mediating factors as well as clinical interventions to help obese individuals safely recover from slips, trips and other falls are also key research goals.

There is no specific CPT or ICD-10 code for a plantar plate tear. If the
procedure you perform was designed
to repair the position and instability
of the toe with repair of the metatarsal-phalangeal joint capsule/ligament
(one would presume that is why you
are there), then CPT 28313 (reconstruction, angular deformity of toe,
soft tissue procedures only) is appropriate.

A growing number of diabetics are being diagnosed with a debilitating foot deformity called Charcot foot.
Charcot foot often confines patients to wheelchairs, and in severe cases can require amputation.
Charcot foot patients from around the country come to Loyola University Medical Center orthopedic surgeon Michael Pinzur, M.D., for a surgical treatment that enables 91 percent of his patients to walk normally again. The technique secures foot bones with an external frame, made of stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminum.

As healthcare turns toward a more patient-centered, value-based model, providers' approach to medical errors — the third leading cause of death in the U.S. — is also changing. Increasingly, the culture of secrecy that led to providers taking a "deny and defend" approach to medical errors is giving way to an "acknowledge and apologize" culture in which clinicians fully explain the mistake to the patient and then apologize for it, according to a CNN report.

This leads to asking the question: What are doctors and other medical professionals doing to practice self-care and wellness?

Relative to traditional shod rear-foot strike running, habituated barefoot running is associated with a forefoot-strike and lower loading rates. Accordingly, barefoot running has been purported to reduce lower-extremity injury risk. Investigations, however, indicate that novice barefoot runners may not innately adopt a FFS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine lower-extremity dynamics of habitually shod runners who acutely transition to barefoot running. Twenty-two recreational RFS runners were included in this investigation. This laboratory controlled study consisted of two visits one-week apart, examining habitually shod, then novice barefoot running.
