New research by health psychologists has shown that the beliefs and expectations of people with diabetic foot ulcers about their illness have a significant independent effect on their survival.
The study was led by researchers at The University of Nottingham. It set out to expand on an area of previous research which, in some studies, linked depression to poorer clinical outcomes for diabetic ulcer patients.

Trephine arthrodesis in foot surgery is nothing new but for some reason, foot surgeons rarely consider it. Surgeons can utilize trephine arthrodesis for many of the joints in the foot, including but not limited to the subtalar joint, tarsometatarsal joints, intercuneiform joints and the naviculocuneiform joint. In my experience, arthrodesis of the second and third tarsometatarsal joints is the primary procedure for which I will choose a trephine arthrodesis technique. While the main focus of this article will be the use of the trephine arthrodesis for tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis, the concepts and techniques with the trephine arthrodesis are similar regardless of the joint(s) you are fusing.

There were over 65,000 hospital admissions for amputation in patients with diabetes across the U.S. in 2009. This does not take into account hospital admissions for foot infection that did not lead to amputation or that occurred in patients without diabetes. Although the number of hospitalizations for amputation per 1,000 patients with diabetes has been trending downward since 1996, the number of U.S. patients diagnosed with diabetes has been steadily increasing to a level of 20.9 million in 2009. This translates to a likely increase in the number of hospitalizations for diabetic foot infection over time.

Men and women with diabetes generally have shorter life expectancy and fewer years without disability than people without diabetes, according to a new study from Australia.
"Most individuals with diabetes are familiar with the classical complications affecting eyes, kidneys, feet and cardiovascular system, but this study highlights another impact, especially about the number of disability free years which were lost," said senior author Dianna J. Magliano of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and Monash University in Melbourne.

AJ Sobrilsky remembers working in a running store in 2009, the year the New York Times bestseller "Born to Run" was published. The book described author Christopher McDougall's journey to discover the secret behind the long distance running prowess of the Tarahumara Indians in northern Mexico.
By the end of the book, McDougall makes a convincing argument for abandoning fancy cushioned shoes in favor of minimalist or barefoot styles that better approximate how humans have been running for centuries.

In the next four to five years, physician practices of all sizes will likely be required to survey patients, so they should get ready now, reports Medscape.
Patient surveys are already required for practices with 100 or more providers — and this data must be shared with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Practices involved with a Pioneer or Medicare Shared Savings Program accountable care organization also have to survey patients every six months, according to the article.

Physicians Practice
In the rush of daily practice, it is easy to miss what patients are feeling. But often just a few minutes of mindful attention can make all the difference. Frequent communication and a brief explanation lessen the feeling of uncertainty and help create some predictability. When the physician takes time to understand the patient's situation and then becomes his partner in health, there is a much higher likelihood of compliance.
