Incorporating motion at the time of distraction when treating ankle osteoarthritis had a sustained beneficial effect on outcome at two-years follow-up, according to a recently presented study. The findings were presented by Charles L. Saltzman, MD, at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in New Orleans. According to
Saltzman, initial reports show joint distraction is a promising new treatment approach for advanced arthritis. Early findings for the treatment showed efficacy with fixed distraction in the treatment of ankle osteoarthritis.

With over ten million diabetics in the U.S. alone and approximately 150,000 amputations
performed yearly, inventor and American board-certified prosthetist John E. Rooney developed a custom-made ankle-foot orthosis with the trade name Ulcer Healing Orthosis(R) or UHO(R). The U.S. patented device helps to support the lower leg and foot, reducing mechanical stress on the bottom of the ulcerated foot. This allows blood flow to the ulceration, encouraging healing to continue while walking.

The ankle is made of three bones, the tibia (shinbone), fibula (the small bone toward the outside of the leg) and the talus (anklebone). There are two joints: an ankle joint and a syndesmosis joint (which connects the tibia and fibula). The ankle is a very flexible joint. It can move up and down and side to side. The ankle also takes on a tremendous amount of pressure and strain during movement. Strong bands of tissue, called
ligaments, hold the bones in place and give the ankle stability.
