Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice
Complications from diabetes mellitus including major lower extremity amputation may have significant impact on a patient's mortality. This study determined what impact the addition of a limb salvage and diabetic foot program involving podiatry had at an academic institution over 16 years by analyzing high-low amputation ratio data.

Jodi Schoenhaus Gold DPM writes:
"When an artist sits with a blank canvas, the first stroke of the brush sets the trajectory for the outcome of the piece. The same is true when deciding on surgical incision placement. From the start of the case and for the rest of the patient's life, the incision shapes the path for the entire outcome.

Degrees in health disciplines need a balance of theoretical knowledge and sufficient clinical practice to meet registration requirements, in particular those requiring specialist skills such as the use of scalpels and other small instruments, such as podiatry. However, despite this requirement there is a scarcity of literature and research to inform teaching of these particular manual clinical skills. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the current approaches being used to teach manual skills, in particular scalpel skills, in university podiatry programs in Australia and New Zealand, and to explore what issues, challenges and innovations exist.

Lateral ankle sprains are the most common athletic injury and account for more than 7 percent of all injuries reported in collegiate sports. Repetitive sprain can lead to an increased risk of ankle joint osteoarthritis and to a debilitating condition known as chronic ankle instability. There is no consensus on the exact causes of CAI, however, multiple factors are thought to contribute.

Larry Huppin DPM writes:
"I had a colleague call me as he was having a problem with a 9-year-old patient’s parents. The child presented with calcaneal apophysitis and a rather severe pes planus foot type. The treating podiatrist prescribed a pediatric flatfoot pathology specific orthosis and dispensed the device. The parent and child returned two weeks later, stating that all symptoms were resolved and they wanted a second pair. The doctor ordered a second pair."

Telemedicine and telehealth services have been connecting patients and providers who aren't sitting in front of each other for many years. The trend has been picking up speed in more recent years as some encounters leverage the internet and go virtual to contact their physicians or submit monitoring data. Now, more patients are using telemedicine to obtain a second opinion from specialists and subspecialists without having to travel into a larger city, or across the country.
