Older Americans with diabetes born in the 1940s are living longer and with less disability performing day to day tasks than those born 10 years earlier, according to new research published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.
The study examined trends in disabled years of life among a national sample of US adults born in the 1940s compared with the 1930s. They found that adults with diabetes born in the 1940s generally become disabled later and were living more years without disability by the age of 70, than those born in the 1930s. The study did not differentiate between people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Lower extremity injuries are extremely common among runners. Approximately, 79 percent of runners sustain at least one lower extremity injury per year. Due to reductions in impact loading as well as increased strength in the foot and lower leg musculature, some have suggested that barefoot running may reduce injury rates in comparison to shod running. Advocates of barefoot running have promoted it as a means to reduce injury risk while opponents argue that barefoot running can increase injury risk due to the lack of cushioning and support afforded by modern running shoes.

A previous study highlighted the importance of footwear to individuals' sense of their identity, demonstrating that shoes must "fit" someone socially, as well as functionally. However, unhealthy shoes can have a detrimental effect on both foot health and mobility. This project utilizes qualitative social science methods to enable podiatrists to understand the broader contribution of footwear to patients' sense of themselves and from this an online toolkit was developed to aid footwear education.

Stress fractures are some of the
most common sports injuries and can
be quite debilitating. Significant morbidity is associated with this injury
and can result in substantial time
loss in training and competing, especially if not identified in a timely
manner. A stress fracture represents
an imbalance between stresses applied to the body and its ability to respond to those stresses. It will occur
when stress is applied without appropriate rest.
This leads to osteoclastic
activity, which then outweighs osteoblastic activity, leading to failure
of the bone. A proper diagnosis is
therefore imperative, followed by a
proper plan of care. This article presents an overview of current concepts
of lower extremity stress fractures,
their evaluation, classification, management and prevention.

The combination of type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease can be deadly.
New research from a global study led by a physician from UConn Health has found that patients with Type 2 diabetes admitted into the hospital for congestive heart failure face a one in four chance of dying over the next 18 months.
The results were presented on June 11 at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting in New Orleans and published online in the ADA journal Diabetes Care. The findings paint a much grimmer picture of the outcome for diabetes patients with severe heart disease than was previously known.
