Expect delays: Poor connections between rural and urban health systems challenge multidisciplinary care for rural Americans with diabetic foot ulcers
Journal of Foot and Ankle Research
Rural Americans with diabetic foot ulcers face a 50% increased risk of major amputation compared to their urban counterparts. Researchers sought to identify health system barriers contributing to this disparity. They interviewed 44 participants involved in the care of rural patients with DFUs: six rural primary care providers, 12 rural specialists, 12 urban specialists, nine support staff and five patients/caregivers.

The windlass mechanism, first described by John Hicks in 1954, defines the anatomical and biomechanical relationship between the hallux and the plantar fascia.
