Many have long suspected the answer, but a new study would appear to resolve the question: Are flip flops really that bad for your feet? According to Chen and colleagues from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, flip flops are most likely no better than barefoot when it comes to lower-limb co-contraction and joint contact force in the ankle.

The association between foot injuries and foot alignment, including the transverse arch height (TAH) and asymmetry, was examined in athletes participating in college track events.
This study included 55 male athletes participating in a college track and field club. Data including demographic information and the incidence of foot injuries within a year prior to participation in this study were obtained via questionnaires.

Foot orthoses are routinely used to treat plantar fasciopathy in clinical practice. However, minimal evidence exists as to the effect of both truly custom designed foot orthoses, as well as that of the shoe the foot orthoses are placed into. This study investigated the effect of wearing custom foot orthoses and new athletic footwear on first-step pain, average 24-h pain and plantar fascia thickness in people with unilateral plantar fasciopathy over 12 weeks.

Knee joint hypermobility may be associated with symptoms of ankle and foot osteoarthritis, as well as with talonavicular OA, according to results of a cross-sectional cohort study published in Arthritis Care & Research.
The investigators sought to explore the relationship between joint hypermobility and symptoms of ankle and foot OA, along with radiographic evidence of disease, in a cohort of African American and Caucasian patients between 55 and 94 years from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project.
