ACFAOM
The education program at ACFAOM's 2016 Annual Conference in June was focused on what the office-based podiatrist needs, and was presented in an interactive manner using real clinical cases. There were no boring lectures!
We video recorded many of the sessions to share with those unable to come to Savannah for the conference or attend the 'live streaming' of sessions via the Internet — these education modules are now listed on the ACFAOM 'Live Learning Center,' which was developed to bring current education on all aspects of ACFAOM's mission to its members, and also to DPMs who look to ACFAOM as the one professional society in podiatric medicine that represents what most practicing podiatrists do on a day-to-day basis. David G. Armstrong DPM M.D. Ph.D. writes:
"We like to tell our patients they should stop sitting down. They should get up and stand because sitting, for many patients or perhaps for the population in general, can be thought of as the new smoking. However, for our most high-risk patients, it seems that standing can also be dangerous. A new study by our team in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology finds unprotected standing may be 'an even more unrealized and sinister culprit' in wound healing delays."

Podiatry Management
If you feel like you never adequately understand Medicare durable medical equipment compliance rules, you
are not alone. Many have gotten
audited and too many unfortunately
are not sufficiently informed to be
adequately prepared. While we could
bemoan the feeling of having a target
stapled to our backs as practitioners
trying to provide the best care for
our patients, the days of getting away
with less than adequate compliance
documentation are gone.

Residents are required to take care of patients, follow orders and execute someone else's plans. They always have the guiding safety net of the attendings, who truly call the shots.
The moment residency is complete and it is your first day of work, everything changes. The patients are yours. The diagnosis is the one you make and you set the treatment course. Most of the time, the patient respects your knowledge and trusts your plan. Occasionally, you get the patient who tries to control the visit: the "demanding patient" (8 percent of patients, according to a recent article by Gogineni and colleagues).

New ICD-10 procedure and diagnosis codes — added as a result of the thawing of a partial code freeze in effect since 2011 — are coming Oct. 1. The new codes continue the trend started with ICD-10 implementation to provide greater specificity, telling an even better patient story and keeping pace with ever-changing demands for health information.

Orthotic prescription is often based on the premise that the mechanical effects will be more prominent in individuals with greater calcaneal eversion. The objective of this study is to compare the effects of a prefabricated foot orthosis on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics between recreational athletes with high and low calcaneal eversion during running.
