On behalf of our Board of Directors, Happy Thanksgiving!
|
    |
From ACFAOM's family to yours — we wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.
Please take time over the next few days to reflect on how fortunate we are to practice a profession that brings relief from pain and saves lives on a daily basis.

Recovery from a sprained ankle often involves some kind of physical therapy, but a new study questions the usefulness of that approach.
In a Canadian study of more than 500 people suffering from such injuries, about the same number of people achieved "excellent recovery" at six months — whether or not they'd received standard physical therapy.

Pain Medicine News
The FDA has granted fast track designation to trans-capsaicin (CNTX-4975, Centrexion) for the treatment of Morton's neuroma, a rare, painful nerve disorder in the foot.
CNTX-4975 is a highly potent, ultrapure, synthetic form of injectable trans-capsaicin that works by selectively targeting the capsaicin receptor (transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1) to rapidly inactivate the local pain fibers transmitting signals to the brain. With a short half-life, trans-capsaicin is cleared from the body within 24 hours.

Lower Extremity Review
In lower extremity healthcare, as in politics, it hasn't been easy for women to succeed in traditionally male-dominated roles. The gender demographics have shifted toward parity over time — in some specialties more than others — but challenges still remain.
In some lower extremity specialties those barriers began falling long ago, and the faces of leaders in O&P, podiatry, biomechanics, athletic training and even orthopedic surgery (notorious, at least in the past, for its "jock and fraternity" culture) are increasingly female. Some are even at or approaching parity, especially among students. But women are still in the minority in many of these fields.

Diabetes affects 387 million people
worldwide and this is estimated
to increase to 642 million by 2040.
Of those diagnosed with diabetes,
the lifetime incidence of diabetic
foot ulcers is 25 percent with a lower extremity
amputation rate of 25 percent. The
five-year mortality rate in complicated
diabetic foot ulcers ranges from
39-80 percent. Financially, diabetic foot
complications have been a major
public burden around the world and
they add an additional $9 to $13 billion
to the $245 billion spent annually
on diabetic patients in the U.S.

Journal of Foot and Ankle Research
Foot orthoses are frequently used in sports for the treatment of overuse complaints with sufficient evidence available for certain foot-related overuse pathologies like plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritis and foot pain (e.g., metatarsalgia). One important aim is to reduce plantar pressure under prominent areas like metatarsal heads. For the forefoot region, mainly two common strategies exist: metatarsal pad and forefoot cushioning. The aim of this study was to evaluate which of these orthosis concepts is superior in reducing plantar pressure in the forefoot during running.
