Stephen Bui, DPM, doesn’t think of himself
as an inventor. “I’m a problem-solver,”
Dr. Bui says. And the problem he set out

What if you were told that this problem cost more than the five most expensive cancers in the U.S. but far less than one one-thousandth of comparative federal and private funding is spent on attacking it?

About 2 million people each year seek treatment for sharp, stabbing, sometimes burning pain in the heel or arch of their foot, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The diagnosis: plantar fasciitis, a condition that develops when the plantar fascia — the band of tissue on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel to the toes and supports the arch — becomes inflamed or strained.

The postoperative use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is a large topic of debate within the foot and ankle community, and orthopaedics at large due to the well-documented opioid epidemic. Much of the literature regarding the use of NSAIDs is limited to spinal surgery and animal models with only a scant amount of literature dedicated to foot and ankle procedures. However, recent literature specific to foot and ankle surgeons advocates for the use of ketorolac (Toradol) or ibuprofen within the acute post-operative multimodal pain pathway.

Healthcare communication issues are a thing of the present, not the past. Communication remains fragmented, with many healthcare organizations remaining reliant on landline phones, fax machines, and pagers. These findings are from technology company TigerConnect in its annual State of Healthcare Communications report, a survey of healthcare leaders and patients detailing the pervasive challenges in healthcare communications.
