The dreaded muffin top is the bane of many people’s lives — an unsightly roll of flab that spills over the top of trousers or a skirt.
But now doctors have discovered an ingenious use for the excess fat — they are using it in injections for painful foot ulcers that are difficult to treat.
The technique, which results in rapid healing of the ulcer, has been found to be particularly effective among diabetic patients.

Why would people go to the trouble of seeking out a healthcare provider’s medical advice only to neglect or reject the provider’s educated information? Discouraging? Absolutely.
But is this disregarding behavior by patients unique to any one specialty? Hardly. As long as there has been a doctor-patient relationship, there has been some degree of non-adherence. In fact, generally speaking, approximately 25 percent of patients on average are guilty of not following a doctor’s orders.

This study investigated the acute effects of fatiguing foot muscle exercises on the maximum muscle strength of the foot and postural control ability. Eighteen healthy young individuals performed fatiguing foot muscle strength exercises, and their toe flexor and ankle plantar flexor strength and postural control ability were measured before and after the exercises. Postural control ability was evaluated using the path of the center of pressure during three balance tasks: double-leg standing with eyes open; double-leg standing with eyes closed; and single-leg standing with eyes open.

Journal of Foot and Ankle Research
Quantifying the strength of the intrinsic foot muscles has been a challenge for clinicians and researchers. The reliable measurement of this strength is important in order to assess weakness, which may contribute to a variety of functional issues in the foot and lower leg, including plantar fasciitis and hallux valgus. This study reports three novel methods for measuring foot strength — doming (previously unmeasured), hallux flexion and flexion of the lesser toes.

Orthotic devices for hallux limitus are designed to limit first metatarsophalangeal joint motion while providing cushioning and plantar pressure distribution. A lack of quality research on conservative treatment of the disorder, however, forces clinicians to rely on their own experience.

Patients with diabetes have
a higher risk of complications after sustaining an
ankle fracture. Diabetes
continues to be a growing
problem. According to the International Diabetes Foundation,
415 million adults have diabetes,
and by 2040, this will rise to 642
million. Recently, the IDF estimated
that half of all adults living with
diabetes are unaware of their type
2 diabetes. The increased incidence
of diabetes (and its increased incidence of complications) and its sequelae are important to be aware of
when treating ankle fractures.

Suboptimal healing of the tendon bone interface remains an unsolved problem. One solution is a biocompatible tissue engineered construct that promotes augmented healing. We hypothesize that 1.) the presence of platelet-rich plasma and prolonged in vitro incubation produces tissue engineered tendon bone interface scaffolds with greater reseeding of viable Adipo-derived Stem Cells and 2.) when implanted with extracellular matrix hydrogel, constructs will display superior in vivo strength repair and biocompatibility.
